Window seats for your home in Whetstone
Window seats for homes in Whetstone
Many windows have a radiator beneath them. Over a radiator, the seat needs a grille or open front so warmth can reach the room. The front of the seat includes a grille, with space left around the radiator. We will look at your radiator during the design visit in Whetstone. If your home has nowhere to keep blankets, toys or books and a period room that needs furniture to suit it, window seats made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish can solve it.
In an area where interwar homes or semis make up much of the housing, as around Whetstone, loft conversions are common, and they leave low eaves and sloping ceilings. Those spaces, along with bays and hallways, are where fitted storage can add the most. For lofts, we work in spaces that are already converted or boarded.
If the job needs another trade, such as an electrician or a plumber, we will tell you, so it can be arranged before fitting day. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Honest limits
Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work are not part of what we do. There are a few other points to bear in mind:
- Making good the walls, which is for a plasterer or decorator
- Plumbing work on the radiator under the window
- Fixing the window itself
If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can message us from the contact page and we’ll give you a straight answer. How it works.

How we price window seats
The price for your room depends on:
- The overall size of the piece
- Parking and unloading on your street
- The number of doors and drawers
- How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
How it is painted is part of the price: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.
What to send when you get in touch
These details help when you contact us:
- Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
- Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
- How you want to use the space
- The postcode, so we can plan the visit
To make a start, send us a few details through our contact form and tell us a little about the room. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and a written quote follows.
Tips worth knowing
Getting the most from window seats starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:
- Bring paint colours you like to the design visit
- Make room so the whole bay can be measured
- Think about whether you’d like shelves either side
- Let us know about the radiator before we visit
We can give you the seat measurements for a cushion maker. Wait until the paint has cured before putting the cushion on, to protect both the fabric and the finish.
Avoid standing on the seat to reach the window or curtains. Standing on it can mark the paint and strain the lid. It will look better for longer with a little care.
Is it time for window seats?
A radiator under the window often makes the space hard to use. A built-in seat with a grille lets the heat out while making the space useful. It solves the problem of what to do with the space.
We are often asked to help with:
- A radiator that makes the space hard to use
- Wanting new furniture to sit well in an older room
- A nursery or bedroom short of storage
- A recess under the window doing nothing
For an older house near Church of St John, a seat under a sash window can keep shutters and cills clear.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- Is it spray painted or hand painted?
- Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
- How the doors are hung and adjusted
- How they handle walls that are not straight
Questions from Whetstone
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Whetstone?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.
Can you fit furniture in a home close to Oakleigh Park station?
Yes. We cover all of Barnet and the rest of London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.
Does fitted furniture need planning permission?
Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.
Can I send photos ahead of the visit?
Yes, they help. Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, particularly with rough measurements. You can send them when you drop us a line using the contact form.
Can you fit furniture on an external wall?
It needs a little planning: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. We do not treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.
What does a bespoke window seat cost?
We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. The shape of the window, the mix of drawers and lids, and any grille all play a part. Everything is set out in a quote in writing after the visit.
How fitting day works
In older rooms, the furniture normally has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details, so it sits neatly against the room. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the window and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. In a 1930s house with a converted loft, the stairs to the loft room are often steeper than the main flight, so any section going up there is sized for them. Elsewhere in the house, the route is normally more generous. Each section is assembled and fixed in the room.
- You let us know about the window and the room.
- At the design visit, every side of the window is measured.
- The design is agreed and a quote in writing follows.
- The seat is built in our workshop and painted in your colour. The materials are moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit it in your home and check every lid and drawer with you. A radiator grille, if there is one, lets the heat through.
Before we arrive
- Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
- Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
How to get a quote
We quote once we’ve seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and go through the design with you, and the written quote comes after. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. To book a design visit, use our contact form.
