Fitted cupboards in Arkley

We build each fitted cupboard for the space it will live in. It can rise to the ceiling or stop at a height that suits the room, and it follows the walls rather than leaving gaps around them. Hallways, landings, utility rooms, boot rooms and alcoves all make good homes for one, with the inside planned around what you want to store. If you’re living with a cupboard for a recess or odd corner and storage for coats and shoes in the hallway, fitted cupboards made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish can solve it.

With interwar houses or semis a big part of the picture around Arkley, loft conversions are common, and they leave low eaves and sloping ceilings. Fitted storage can make use of the eaves, the bay or the hall. We build storage in lofts that are already converted or boarded.

Once you’ve read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is built in our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Arkley homes and fitted cupboards

Homes built between 1945 and 1972 make up about 35% of the housing in the streets around Arkley, with about 33% built between 1919 and 1939, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Near the centre of Arkley, Historic England’s list includes Arkley Windmill (Grade II*), about 0.6 miles south-west, and Church of St Peter (Grade II), under half a mile south-west. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, like fixing into original panelling. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. About 33% of homes in the neighbourhood around Arkley date from between 1919 and 1939, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Interwar houses often have room in the hall and the box room for fitted cupboards.

For an older house near St Peter's Church, hallway recesses and alcoves are where fitted cupboards earn their keep. If you live in a flat close to Elstree & Borehamwood station, fitted cupboards are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.

Arkley is about 4 miles south-east of Finchley, within the London Borough of Barnet. Our work covers every London borough and the City of London, Arkley included. Our Barnet coverage includes Arkley.

Postcode districts we cover here for fitted cupboards: EN5 and NW7. You will find streets here such as Well Road, Glebe Lane and Brett Road, and homes on each of them are within our area for fitted cupboards. Arkley sits close to the A411, and we plan where the van can stop before fitting day. If you’re just outside Arkley, we also cover Rowley Green (1 mile north-west), High Barnet (1 mile north-east), Hadley (1 mile north-east), Totteridge (2 miles south-east) and Mill Hill (2 miles south). Other parts of Barnet we cover include Finchley (4 miles south-east), Barnet (2 miles east), Burnt Oak (3 miles south-west), East Finchley (5 miles south-east), Hendon (4 miles south) and Whetstone (3 miles south-east).

Flats, leases and landlords

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, and that is best sorted before fitting day. We cannot advise on your lease.

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so let us know about it at the design visit.

The problems fitted cupboards solve

Some spaces are just hard to use. A recess beside a chimney breast, a gap at the end of a corridor or the space over a stair can all hold a cupboard that fits it exactly.

Most of the enquiries we get are about things like these:

  • Space for laundry, cleaning things and boots
  • Storage in a corner nothing else fits
  • Tall cupboards where space is short
  • Somewhere for coats, shoes and bags

If you live near Whitings Hill Open Space, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and fitted cupboards can give those things a place.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
  • Real projects you can actually look at
  • Whether they measure the room themselves
  • Whether you’ll get a quote in writing, not just a figure

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it is easy to buy.

Your questions about fitted cupboards in Arkley

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Elstree & Borehamwood station?

Yes. We cover all of Barnet and the rest of London. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Arkley?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.

Can I send pictures before the visit?

Yes, they help. Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, especially with rough sizes. To send them, use our contact form.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

It needs a little planning: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. Damp treatment isn’t something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.

How much time does fitting need?

Every job is different. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the cupboards and the room, and your quote sets out the fitting days.

Is it possible to build a cupboard around a boiler?

Yes, as long as the design respects the boiler’s instructions. We allow for the clearances and ventilation it needs and make sure an engineer can reach it.

What happens on fitting day

Getting everything level comes first. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. In a 1930s house with a converted loft, the stairs to the loft room are often steeper than the main flight, so pieces for a loft room are sized for the narrowest point. Elsewhere in the house, the route is normally more generous. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.

  1. You get in touch with some details about the space. A rough sketch helps if you have one.
  2. We visit, measure and talk through doors, shelves and rails.
  3. A quote in writing is sent to you, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. Everything is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The cupboards are fitted in your home. They’re set level and scribed to the walls as they go in.

Before we arrive

  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Empty the space we will be working in
