Fitted cupboards in Mill Hill

We build each fitted cupboard for the space it will live in. It runs from the floor to the ceiling, or to whatever height suits the spot, and it follows the walls rather than leaving gaps around them. We fit them in hallways, on landings, in utility and boot rooms and in alcoves, with the inside planned around what you want to store. We make fitted cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the things people most often want solved are tidying away the gas and electricity meters and somewhere for coats, shoes and bags.

An interwar house tends to have truer walls than a Victorian one, though rarely square corners. Much of the housing around Mill Hill is interwar, semi-detached or detached, and every piece is still scribed where it meets the wall. Each piece is levelled on site, so doors, lids and drawers line up.

A quote in writing follows the design visit. It sets out the design we have talked through, the materials and the finish.

Do you need fitted cupboards in Mill Hill?

Hiding a boiler or a set of meters is a common reason to call. They’re rarely attractive, but they need to stay accessible, so a cupboard has to be designed around them. We plan the doors, panels and ventilation with that in mind.

We’re often asked to help with:

  • A cupboard for a recess or odd corner
  • Built-in storage that matches the woodwork
  • Hiding meters and a fuse board neatly
  • Boxing in a boiler with room for servicing

If your children go to St Paul's CofE Primary School NW7 or a school nearby, fitted cupboards can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote
  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber

How to choose a carpenter in London

Caring for painted furniture

Looking after painted furniture is simple with a little care. These habits help most:

  • Make a note of what needs a home
  • Go easy on new doors for a while
  • Deal with any damp walls first
  • Don’t store things against the boiler

Doors are hung and adjusted when we fit them. Timber and walls shift slightly through the year, and hinges can be adjusted to keep the gaps even. If a door catches, it’s usually a small hinge adjustment.

Before the design visit, think about what will go in each cupboard. Coats, shoes, cleaning things and bedding all need different depths and fittings, so it helps to know this early.

How fitting day works

If anything comes up on the day, just ask. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully. How long fitting takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and your quote sets out the fitting days. It’s useful to clear the room and the route before we arrive. Fitting day starts with protecting the floors and setting out the pieces. Each piece is levelled, scribed where the wall wanders and fixed to suit the wall.

  1. You get in touch and let us know whether the cupboard will house a boiler, meters or a fuse board.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and note the clearances and ventilation the boiler manufacturer asks for.
  3. A quote in writing follows with the design, materials and finish.
  4. The cupboards are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with the access planned in.
  5. The cupboards are fitted and set level, and we check the access with you.

Before we arrive

  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician ahead of time

Advice

Flats, conversions and lettings

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, unloading takes some planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so let us know about it at the design visit.

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the design visit.

How it is made

Moisture-resistant MDF

We use moisture-resistant MDF for many doors and carcasses, because it stays flat and paints beautifully. It is a good choice for utility rooms and cupboards on external walls.

Plinths and scribe strips

We use a plinth to set the cupboard level on an uneven floor. Scribe strips are trimmed to follow the wall.

FAQs: fitted cupboards in Mill Hill

Do you make fitted cupboards for homes in Mill Hill?

Yes. We cover all of Barnet and the rest of London, and Mill Hill is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.

Do you cover homes near Mill Hill Broadway station?

Yes, homes across Barnet and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with some details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Can a fitted cupboard cover the meters and fuse board?

Yes. A cupboard can tidy them away and still leaves them reachable. We do not move meters or fuse boards, as that’s a job for your supplier or electrician.

What finishes do you offer?

There are two ways to finish it: spray painted or hand painted. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. You don’t need to watch us work.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement. Let us know when you first get in touch, and we will see what we can do.

Close to Bittacy Hill Park? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and fitted cupboards can give those things a place. For an older house near St Paul's Church, a shallow cupboard in a narrow hall can hold coats without blocking the way.
