The problems fitted cupboards solve
Others want their cupboards to match the rest of the house. Painted doors with a simple frame can sit happily alongside period skirting and coving, which keeps the look calm.
Typical reasons people contact us include:
- A utility room with proper storage
- Cupboards that sit well with skirting and coving
- A linen cupboard on the landing
- Boxing in a boiler with room for servicing
If your home is one of the older houses near All Saints' Hampton, hallway recesses and alcoves are where fitted cupboards earn their keep.
Before you hire any carpenter
- Can you see real work of theirs?
- How the furniture will be finished, and where
- How parking will work on your street
- Whether they measure the room themselves
Fitted cupboards in Hampton: what you get
A boiler cupboard needs more thought than most. The boiler maker’s instructions set out the clearances and ventilation it needs, and the cupboard is built to respect them. We make sure the doors open fully so the boiler can be serviced, while any work on the boiler is for a Gas Safe engineer. We make fitted cupboards from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and people most often get in touch about tidying away the gas and electricity meters and landing shelves for bedding and towels.
In a family house, the hall and stairs typically carry the most clutter. With interwar houses, semis and detached homes a large part of the housing around Hampton, well-planned storage by the door or under the stairs can take a lot of it. Anything that needs to stay reachable, like meters or a fuse board, is designed around.
Everything we agree at the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If something isn’t quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Honest limits
We don’t treat damp or carry out building work, so these points are worth knowing:
- Any plumbing in a utility room
- New sockets, lighting or wiring (your electrician)
- Work on a boiler, which is for an engineer on the Gas Safe Register
If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can use our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How it works.

What happens on fitting day
At the end, we tidy up and lift the floor protection. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you and explain how to look after the paint. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the cupboards and the room, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Some interwar and suburban streets have driveways, which can make unloading easier, so it’s worth mentioning during the design visit. Otherwise, details of permits or nearby bays help. Floors and doorways are protected while the pieces come in.
- You tell us where the cupboards should go.
- At the design visit we measure at several points, as walls and floors in older homes are rarely flat or level.
- A written quote follows.
- We make the cupboards in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- On fitting day each cupboard is set level on a plinth or adjustable feet and scribed to the wall.
- The spray-painted or hand-painted finish completes the job, and new paintwork should be treated gently while it cures.
Before we arrive
- Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
- Clear the area where the furniture is going
How to get a quote
If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you do not, that’s fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

When is bespoke worth it?
Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well.
The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.
Boards, parts and paint
Hand-painted finish
Hand painting can be done in your home, after the cupboards are fitted. It is easy to touch up later.
Moisture-resistant MDF
MDF gives a smooth surface for a painted finish, and the moisture-resistant grade copes with damper spots.
Questions we are often asked
Can you fit furniture in a home close to Hampton station?
Yes, homes across Richmond upon Thames and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with some details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Hampton?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to let us know about parking at the measuring visit.
Should I send pictures?
Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit, along with rough measurements. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.
Can you hide my gas and electricity meters?
Yes. A cupboard can tidy them away and still leaves them reachable. We don’t move meters or fuse boards; that is for your supplier or an electrician.
Can you fit furniture on an external wall?
An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps to avoid condensation. If there is damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.
Do I need permission to fit furniture in a leasehold flat?
Possibly. It depends on your lease, and some need consent for alterations. We cannot give advice on your lease, so it’s worth checking before fitting day.
