About our fitted cupboards in Richmond

Boxing in a boiler is a job that needs care. The boiler maker’s instructions set out the clearances and ventilation it needs, and we design the cupboard to keep to them. Doors open wide enough for servicing, while any work on the boiler is for a Gas Safe registered engineer. Typical reasons to get in touch are hiding meters and a fuse board neatly and storage for towels and bedding; the furniture is made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Outside walls in houses from before 1919 are typically solid brick, which can be cold, so storage against it is designed with ventilation behind. A large share of the homes around Richmond date from then. Damp should be sorted before anything is fitted against the wall.

A written quote is the clearest record of what we have agreed. It describes the fitted cupboard we’ve designed for the room, its materials and its finish, and the workshop works from it.

When you need someone else

Before you plan the job, it’s useful to know what we don’t do:

  • Plumbing for washing machines or sinks (your plumber)
  • New sockets, lighting or wiring (your electrician)

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can get in touch through our contact form and we will give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

Richmond homes and fitted cupboards

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Richmond were built before 1919 (about 54%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 17%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Richmond is partly covered by the Richmond Hill Conservation Area, according to Historic England’s records. The controls in a conservation area are mostly about the outside of buildings, so furniture fitted inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Your council can advise if you’re unsure. More than half of the homes in the neighbourhood around Richmond (about 54%) were built before 1919, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Older homes tend to have awkward recesses and uneven walls, which is where fitted cupboards help, with each one scribed to the wall.

If your children go to The Vineyard School or a school nearby, fitted cupboards can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home. Living in a block of flats near Richmond station? Then fitted cupboards are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. Near listed buildings like The Wick and Wick Cottage, less than half a mile south of the centre of Richmond, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted cupboards can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent.

What it’s made from

Doors and drawer fronts

In a narrow hallway, the way doors open matters, so nothing blocks the way.

Hand-painted finish

A hand-painted finish can be done on site, after the cupboards are fitted. It’s easy to touch up later.

How fitting day works

At the end, we tidy up and take up the floor coverings. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you. How long fitting takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and your quote sets out the fitting days. If your hall still has its original tiles or boards, they’re covered before any carrying starts. Fixings into older walls are made carefully, as lath and plaster can crack if treated roughly. Any decorating around the new pieces is for your decorator.

  1. First, you tell us about the room and what it needs.
  2. The design visit covers measuring and the layout inside.
  3. A written quote is sent to you, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. Everything is made in our workshop.
  5. The cupboards are fitted in your home.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone

Ask for a quote

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you don’t, that’s fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, fill in our short enquiry form.

Advice

Looking after your furniture

Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. Here are a few tips worth knowing:

  • Leaseholders: check your lease first
  • Point out anything that needs access
  • Have damp sorted before fitting
  • Mention any parking or lift rules

Keep the boiler cupboard clear inside, and don’t block the ventilation. When the boiler is serviced, the engineer can open the doors fully to get to it.

If there’s damp on a wall, have it sorted before we fit. Damp behind a cupboard can lead to mould, and external walls can be colder than internal ones. We can allow for ventilation where it is needed.

FAQs: fitted cupboards in Richmond

Is parking a problem for fitting in Richmond?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It is useful to tell us about parking at the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Can you fit fitted cupboards to the uneven walls of an older house in Richmond?

Yes, that is normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

Can you build cupboards for a boot room?

Yes, we plan the room around what needs storing, from coats and boots to laundry and cleaning things. We’re carpenters, so plumbing and wiring are for your other trades.

Can you build a cupboard around a boiler?

Yes, as long as the design respects the boiler’s instructions. We allow for the clearances and ventilation it needs and make sure an engineer can reach it.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two options: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. Your quote sets out which you have chosen.

Do I need the building owner’s consent?

Possibly. Leases vary, and some need consent for alterations. We cannot give advice on your lease, so it is worth checking before fitting day.

Flats, leases and landlords

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the design visit, and we’ll plan the fitting around them.

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants. An agent can arrange access for you, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.
