Fitted cupboards in Northwood: what you get

A utility or boot room has to work hard, every day. Tall cupboards can take the vacuum cleaner, ironing board and cleaning things, with housing for a washing machine or tumble dryer where you want it. Your plumber connects the appliances and your electrician handles any sockets, and we leave room for their work in the design. We make fitted cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and people most often get in touch about boxing in a boiler with room for servicing and a linen cupboard on the landing.

A good part of the housing around Northwood is interwar, semi-detached or detached. If yours is a 1920s or 1930s house, the bay window at the front, the space under the stairs and the box room are the usual places to gain storage. Any meters or fuse board under the stairs stay accessible, and the storage is planned around them.

The quote comes in writing, so there’s time to read it properly and share it with anyone else involved. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

How fitting works for fitted cupboards

Every fitting follows the same order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Semis and detached houses often have a front path or a side gate, which can make carrying in easier. We measure the path, any steps and the front door as part of the route. Floors are covered from the door to the room, and the sections are assembled in place.

  1. You get in touch and describe the space.
  2. At the design visit we plan the cupboards and check how the sections will get in.
  3. We send a written quote.
  4. The cupboards are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections sized for the route.
  5. We bring the sections in and fit them, scribed to the walls.

Before fitting day

  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day

Arranging a design visit

We quote once we’ve seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and go through the design with you, and the written quote comes after. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.

Advice

Looking after your furniture

Most of what helps is simple. What we’d suggest:

  • Make a note of what needs a home
  • Tell us about meters and boilers in the space
  • Don’t store things against the boiler
  • Deal with any damp walls first

Over time, you may want to move a shelf or add a rail. Shelves can be set at heights that suit you, so the space keeps working.

Let us know about parking and access at the design visit. Much of London has controlled parking and some blocks need lifts or deliveries booked ahead.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job.

It’s worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture normally costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

When you need someone else

We design, make and fit the furniture. In practice, that means:

  • Any plumbing in a utility room
  • Moving gas or electricity meters
  • Electrical work inside the cupboard

Not sure whether your space suits fitted cupboards? You can message us from the contact page and we’ll tell you. How a job runs, step by step.

What goes into it

  • Spray-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Ventilated doors
  • Adjustable shelves
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF

What it is made from

Birch plywood

Birch plywood suits carcasses that carry a lot of weight, like those in a utility room.

Spray-painted finish

Spray painting suits doors and panels that you want to look crisp and even, and it is done before the cupboards reach your home.

Fitted cupboards in Northwood: local notes

About 37% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Northwood went up between 1973 and 1999, and about 25% between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. The centre of Northwood is within about a quarter of a mile of the Frithwood, Northwood Conservation Area. The controls in a conservation area are mostly about the outside of buildings, so furniture fitted inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. All of London, Hillingdon included, is inside the ULEZ. It applies to the vans that deliver and fit furniture in Northwood, as it does anywhere else in London. Parking and access are planned at the measuring visit.

If you live near King George V Playing Fields, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and fitted cupboards can give those things a place. If you live in a flat close to Carpenders Park station, the route in is measured as well as the room, and the sections are sized to fit it. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Lodge to Admiralty House, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

Your questions about fitted cupboards in Northwood

Can you make fitted cupboards for a home in Northwood?

Yes, we work across Hillingdon, Northwood included, and across the rest of London. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Does a conservation area in or near Northwood affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, by prior arrangement. Tell us when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.

How much time does fitting need?

How long the fitting takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. We’ll talk it through at the measuring visit.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps, which helps avoid condensation and mould. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

Can you build a cupboard around a boiler?

Yes, provided the cupboard keeps to the boiler maker’s instructions. We plan the space and ventilation around it and make sure an engineer can reach it.
