Alcove units designed for your room

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

How we make alcove units for Northwood

We fit alcove units across Hillingdon and the rest of London. It starts with a design visit, where we measure the alcoves and discuss the design. Then you receive a quote; the units are then made at our workshop and fitted in your home. If your home has bowed walls and sloping floors and alcoves that are wasted space, alcove units made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

Ceilings in interwar houses tend to be lower than in Victorian ones, so alcove units are proportioned to the room rather than copied from a taller one. Where your home is one of the interwar houses or semis that are a big part of the housing around Northwood, the cornice may be plain or missing, so the furniture can run straight to the ceiling. Any skirting is cut around neatly.

Where other trades are needed, for example an electrician to move a socket, we point that out. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Living-room carpentry in Northwood: local notes

In the neighbourhood around Northwood, the largest groups of homes date from between 1973 and 1999 (about 37%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 25%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Within a mile of the centre of Northwood, 5 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Detached and semi-detached houses are home to about 56% of households in the area around Northwood, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. A house like that usually has more rooms to plan around than a flat, and sometimes a driveway that makes unloading easier.

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Lodge to Admiralty House, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. If you live near King George V Playing Fields, alcove units can be arranged to keep the window and the light clear. For an older house near Emmanuel Church, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for alcove units.

Northwood is within the London Borough of Hillingdon, about 3 miles south of Ruislip. Whether your home in Northwood is a terraced house, a flat or a newer build, the furniture is designed around the room as we find it. Northwood is one of 17 places on our list for Hillingdon.

We cover every part of HA6 for alcove units. Whether you live on a street such as Little Stream Close and Sandy Lodge Way or on one nearby, we can arrange a design visit for alcove units. Across the rest of Hillingdon, our area takes in Ruislip (3 miles south), Hayes (7 miles south), Hillingdon (6 miles south), Yeading (6 miles south), Yiewsley (6 miles south) and West Drayton (8 miles south).

What affects the cost of alcove units

Several things affect the price:

  • The overall size of the piece
  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room

The finish affects the cost: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

Getting in touch

A few details help us understand the job before we visit. When you contact us, it is useful to send:

  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • Where you live, with the postcode

Common questions about alcove units

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Do you make alcove units for homes in Northwood?

Yes, we work across Hillingdon, Northwood included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with a few details.

What affects the price of alcove units?

Size, doors and drawers, what goes inside and the finish all affect it, along with access and parking. We send a written quote after the design visit.

Which finishes are there for alcove units?

We offer spray painting in the workshop and hand painting on site. Spray painting gives a smooth, factory-like finish, while hand painting suits a softer, traditional look and is simple to touch up. We’ll help you choose at the design visit.

How long will the fitting take?

The time on site depends on how many alcoves there are and how tall the units go, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Most of the making happens in our workshop, so the time in your home is mostly fitting, scribing and finishing.

Do alcove units affect the chimney’s ventilation?

We design around any vent so it stays open. Ventilation helps keep a capped chimney dry. If there’s damp on the breast already, it’s best sorted before fitting.

Materials and finishes

Shelves

Alcove shelves can be fixed or adjustable. Fixed shelves help brace the unit, while adjustable ones give you room to change things.

Moisture-resistant MDF

For alcove units, MDF gives crisp doors and smooth sides, ready for a spray-painted or hand-painted finish. Its moisture-resistant grade is a sensible choice beside a chimney breast.

What we don’t do

It is worth being clear about where our work stops:

  • Plastering or repairing loose plaster in the alcoves
  • Moving sockets or switches, which needs an electrician
  • Taking out a chimney breast or opening up a fireplace

Not sure whether your space suits alcove units? You can message us from the contact page and we’ll tell you before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

How fitting works for alcove units

Fitting day follows a set order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the alcoves and what goes in them, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Loft stairs in an interwar house can be tight, with a low ceiling at the top, so pieces for a loft room are sized for the narrowest point. Elsewhere in the house, the route is typically more generous. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.

  1. To begin, send us a few details through our contact form; a brief note on the room and the alcoves is enough, and mention if you live in a flat or up a few flights of stairs.
  2. At the design visit we measure the alcoves and also the way in: the front door, the hall and any stair turns. It’s useful to tell us then about parking, as much of London is in a controlled parking zone.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. In our workshop we build the units from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, sized so each piece gets up the stairs and round the corners.
  5. On fitting day the sections come in, are joined in place and scribed to the walls.

Preparing the room

  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
  • Tell us about parking near your home
