Northwood Under-Stairs Storage

Under-stairs storage in Northwood: pull-out drawers, cupboards and coat storage under the stairs. Each piece is designed at a visit to your home, built in our workshop and fitted by us.

  • A staircase with untidy space beneath it
  • Space under the stairs that’s hard to use
  • A vacuum cleaner that has nowhere to go

Under-stairs storage in Northwood

Pull-out drawers make the most of the low, deep end of the space. Rather than reaching into the dark, you pull the drawer towards you and see what’s inside. Cupboards suit the taller end, where coats can hang and a vacuum cleaner can stand. Many designs for homes in Northwood combine the two. If you’re living with an under-stairs cupboard full of clutter and storage that doesn’t match the hallway, that is what under-stairs cupboards are for, made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

If you live in one of the interwar houses or semis around Northwood, the hallway may be wider than in a Victorian terrace, with room for a cupboard by the door. Bays at the front suit a seat with storage below, with a grille where there’s a radiator underneath. Under-stairs cupboards are measured and made for the house you have.

The quote comes in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and share it with anyone else involved. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Under-stairs storage in Northwood: local notes

About 37% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Northwood went up between 1973 and 1999, and about 25% between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. 5 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of central Northwood. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. About 25% of homes in the neighbourhood around Northwood were built between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Post-war homes often have fewer nooks than older houses, so under-stairs cupboards add storage that was never built in, with fixings chosen for the wall.

For a family home near Frithwood Primary School, under-stairs cupboards can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home. Close to King George V Playing Fields? Under-stairs cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things.

What we don’t do

It’s worth being clear about where our work stops:

  • Making good the walls and ceiling, which is for a plasterer or decorator
  • Reshaping or rebuilding the staircase
  • Moving gas pipes under the stairs

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and we will give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

What goes into it

  • Birch plywood
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Pull-out drawers
  • Coat hooks and shoe shelves
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Spray-painted finish

The problems under-stairs storage solve

Most people get in touch because the space has become a dumping ground. Under the stairs is easy to fill and hard to sort, with things pushed to the back and lost in the dark. Purpose-made drawers and shelves give everything its own place, and you no longer need to empty the cupboard to reach one thing.

Most of the enquiries we get are about things like these:

  • Coats and shoes piling up in the hall
  • An old cupboard door that does not suit the hall
  • Needing a compact spot for a laptop
  • Open space under the stairs that collects clutter

If your home is one of the older houses near Emmanuel Church, the triangle under an old staircase is often deeper than it looks.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
  • Will the doors close with even gaps?
  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • A written quote that sets out the job

How to choose a carpenter in London

Pricing under-stairs storage in Northwood

What you pay depends on:

  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • The number of doors and drawers
  • Parking near your home
  • How big the furniture is

How it’s painted is part of the price: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

What to send when you contact us

To give us a picture of the room, it is useful to include:

  • Rough measurements: width, height and depth
  • A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift

The design visit is where every quote starts. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and go through the design with you. A quote in writing follows the visit for you to look over. To book one, fill in our short enquiry form.

Practical tips

A little care keeps the finish looking good, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. These practical tips help:

  • Plan decorating around the fitting
  • Tell us about anything bulky that needs to fit
  • Think about handles and how the fronts will look from the hall
  • Make room so the whole space can be measured

When you load the drawers, put the heaviest things low and towards the front. That keeps the drawers running smoothly and the load where the carcass is strongest. We size the shelves for what you said you’d store, so stick to that and they’ll stay straight.

Keep the doors and drawers closed when the space isn’t in use. A quick sort every so often stops drawers getting too heavy. Wipe up any spills, particularly near the floor, before they dry.

Your questions about under-stairs storage in Northwood

Does a conservation area in or near Northwood affect fitted furniture?

Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Carpenders Park station?

Yes. We cover all of Hillingdon and the rest of London. To get started, you can use our contact form with some details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Is it possible to match the colour of my hallway?

Yes. You choose the colour, and we agree it before the work starts. We can spray it in the workshop or hand-paint it in your home. Both can be matched to a colour you already have.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, by prior arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you get in touch.

What is under-stairs storage made from?

Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish. Birch plywood holds screws well, which matters for drawers that carry weight. The materials and finish are agreed in your quote.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

We need someone to let us in. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

What happens on fitting day

With the carcasses fixed and level, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly, then checked again. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the space and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In a 1930s house with a converted loft, the stairs to the loft room are often steeper than the main flight, so pieces for a loft room are sized for the narrowest point. The main stairs in houses of that age are normally straighter. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.

  1. You get in touch and let us know what’s under the stairs now, including any gas meter, electricity meter or fuse board.
  2. At the design visit we measure the space and plan the storage around the meters, so readers and engineers can still reach them.
  3. You receive a written quote for the storage.
  4. We make it in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a door or panel left where the meters need access.
  5. The storage is fitted and set level, and the meter access is checked with you.

Before fitting day

  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician in advance
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away

Starting with a design visit

You don’t need exact measurements to get started. Everything is measured properly when we visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To arrange it, tell us about the room on our contact form with some details about the room. You receive a quote in writing after the visit.
