Window Seats in Northwood

Window seats in Northwood: window seats for bays and under sash windows, with storage inside. We visit to measure and go through the design, make the furniture in our workshop and fit it.

  • A child’s room that needs storage and seating
  • A radiator under the window getting in the way
  • Looking for a reading spot by the window

Window seats for homes in Northwood

A window seat can hide a surprising amount of storage. A lift-up lid opens the whole space beneath the seat, while drawers mean you do not have to move a cushion to reach things. At the design visit in Northwood, we will help you choose. We make window seats from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a recess under the window doing nothing and an empty bay that doesn’t get used.

Around Northwood, with interwar houses or semis making up much of the housing, the hall is often wide enough for coat and shoe storage. Bays at the front suit a seat with storage below, with a grille so any radiator below keeps heating the room. Window seats are measured and made for the house you have.

You get the quote in writing, so there is time to read it properly. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

The problems window seats solve

Some people plan a window seat as part of updating a room. It is worth talking to us before decorating, so the work can be timed sensibly. Decorating itself is for your decorator.

Typical reasons people contact us include:

  • Wanting a quiet place to read
  • An empty bay that does not get used
  • Wanting new furniture to sit well in an older room
  • Standard furniture leaving gaps in a bay

For a flat near Carpenders Park station, it’s useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote
  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?
  • Whether the route into your home has been checked
  • How they handle walls that are not straight

Our checklist for choosing a carpenter

Flats, blocks and rented homes

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations. We cannot advise on your lease.

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Tell us about them during the design visit, so fitting day is planned around them.

From workshop to your room

The last stage of the day is the finish. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. A front path or side gate can make the carry from the van simpler. We measure the path, any steps and the front door as part of the route. Floors are covered from the door to the room, and the sections are assembled in place.

  1. It starts when you get in touch about a window seat. Say how you’d like to use it, if you know.
  2. We visit to measure and talk about how you will use the seat.
  3. Your quote sets out the design, the materials and the finish.
  4. Your window seat is built in our workshop, shaped to the window.
  5. We fit it in your home and leave it ready to use.

How to prepare

  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager

Arranging a design visit

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you don’t, that is fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To arrange a visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Pricing window seats in Northwood

Prices vary from room to room, and it comes down to:

  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • How big the furniture is
  • How square the room is
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers

Access to the room makes a difference too. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, which the quote allows for. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space.

What to send when you contact us

What helps most when you first contact us:

  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • What the furniture needs to hold

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, once the room is measured and the design talked through. For a quote, drop us a line using the contact form.

Materials and finishes

Doors and drawer fronts

What shows of the seat is mainly its fronts. We make them plain or panelled, with handles to match. Where needed, a grille is part of the front.

Lift-up lids

A lid that lifts is the simplest form of window seat storage. Any cushion has to come off before the lid can lift, so it suits things you reach for now and then.

Storage in Northwood homes: local notes

About 37% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Northwood went up between 1973 and 1999, and about 25% between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. The Frithwood, Northwood Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Northwood. Planning controls in conservation areas are mainly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitting furniture inside a house does not normally need permission. Your council can advise if you’re unsure. Controlled parking zones are common across London, and Hillingdon sets its own rules. If your street in Northwood is in a controlled parking zone, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension through the council may be needed. It helps to let us know about parking during the design visit.

If you live near King George V Playing Fields, window seats can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things. If your children go to Frithwood Primary School or a school nearby, window seats can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home.

Questions from Northwood

Is Northwood in the area you cover for window seats?

Yes. Northwood is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Hillingdon and London. To get started, you can use our contact form with a few details.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Carpenders Park station?

Yes, homes across Hillingdon and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with a few details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

No. We’re carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design, and any new sockets are best done before fitting day.

How long will the window seat fitting take?

The time the fitting takes depends on whether the seat has drawers, a lift-up lid or a radiator grille, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Every part is made at our workshop before we arrive. If you’d like the fitting on a Saturday, that can be arranged.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two choices: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. The finish is agreed in your quote.

Do photos help?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, particularly with rough measurements. To send them, send us a few details through our contact form.
