Fitted wardrobes across HA6: what to expect
In a period bedroom, the alcoves beside the chimney breast make natural wardrobe spaces. Wardrobes in both alcoves leave the chimney breast on show, scribed to follow the uneven walls. We meet the picture rail and cornice neatly, or cut around them. Typical reasons to get in touch are wardrobes that are full to bursting and storage boxes stacked under the bed; the furniture is made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.
The last stage of the day is the finish. With a spray finish from the workshop, there’s typically only filling and touching up to do in the room; hand painting, if that’s what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote.
- You contact us with some details about the room and the wardrobes you’d like, with a rough idea of what you need to hang and fold.
- We visit to measure up and plan the doors, rails, shelves and drawers with you.
- You receive a quote setting out the design and the paint finish.
- The wardrobes are made in sections in our workshop. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit them in your home, scribe them to the walls and hang the doors. The rails, shelves and drawers go in last.
Quotes in HA6
Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, which the quote allows for. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured.

Arranging a design visit
Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space, particularly with rough sizes. To send them over, fill in our short enquiry form, and we will arrange a design visit.

Fitted wardrobes across HA6: local notes
Bedrooms across HA6 might have alcoves, sloping ceilings, bulkheads or none of these. Each piece is fitted to the room’s own walls and floor. You choose the colour and whether it’s spray-painted or hand-painted.
The biggest shares of homes in the HA6 postcode district were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 54%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 23%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. About 54% of homes in the HA6 postcode district date from between 1919 and 1939, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Many interwar houses have a small room over the stairs, which suits fitted storage made around its bulkhead. About 65% of households in the HA6 postcode district live in detached or semi-detached houses, according to Census 2021. In a semi or detached house, a driveway, where there is one, can make unloading easier.
Homes across HA6 range from period terraces to modern blocks, and we work in all of them. Wherever you live, it starts with a visit and a quote.
Northwood: Near listed buildings like Lodge to Admiralty House, about 0.5 miles east of the centre of Northwood, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted wardrobes can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. If you live in a period home close to Emmanuel Church, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go.
Honest limits
We’re carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. It helps to know these before you plan the job:
- Moving switches or sockets, which needs an electrician
- Building work to create a loft room
- Curing damp, which needs the right specialist
Caring for painted furniture
A few practical points help before and after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:
- Think about where you will keep shoes, bags and folded clothes
- Think about whether hinged doors will clear the bed
- Count how much long hanging and short hanging you need
- Empty the area where we will be working
New paintwork is dry to the touch long before it has fully cured. For the first while, open and close the doors gently and avoid knocking hangers against the inside.
Don’t dry washing inside a wardrobe or in the bedroom with the doors shut. A little ventilation in the room helps.
Could you do it yourself?
Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s normally a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.
Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.
Flats, leases and landlords
Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, after checking the walls at the measuring visit.
Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them during the design visit, and we will plan the fitting around them.
Bespoke fitted wardrobes or ready-made?
Bought wardrobes are made in set sizes, which leaves gaps above and beside them. A fitted wardrobe runs to the ceiling and the walls.
Before you hire any carpenter

- How they’ll get the furniture into the room
- Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?
- Can you see real work of theirs?
Questions we are often asked
Can you fit wardrobes in a top-floor flat?
Each wardrobe is built in sections that suit the stairs, landings and lift. Let us know about any concierge or lift booking rules.
What materials do you use?
We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. MDF is stable and takes paint well, while birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, and the quote says which is used where.
Where is the furniture made?
Each piece is built in our workshop for the room it is going into, then brought to your home and fitted. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
How is the price worked out?
It depends on the size, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish, along with access and parking. We send a quote in writing after the design visit.
Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?
There are two options: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. The finish is agreed in your quote.
Can I send pictures ahead of the visit?
Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, particularly with rough sizes. To send them, message us from the contact page.
Can fitted wardrobes go on an external wall?
Yes. Wardrobes on outside walls are designed with ventilation behind and inside, using moisture-resistant MDF. If there is damp on the wall already, it should be sorted first.
