St Mary Cray homes and fitted cupboards

About 42% of the homes in the neighbourhood around St Mary Cray went up between 1945 and 1972, and about 22% between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. That matters for fitted cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Near the centre of St Mary Cray, Historic England’s list includes Church of St Mary (Grade II*), under half a mile north-east, and Spring Hall (Grade II), under half a mile south-east. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, like fixing into original panelling. It is worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. Parking controls in London are set borough by borough, so Bromley has its own. Depending on your street in St Mary Cray, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a council bay suspension may be needed. We ask about parking during the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Fitted cupboards for homes in St Mary Cray

In many London hallways, space is tight, so a cupboard has to earn its place. We can make a shallow cupboard for coats, shoes and bags that still leaves room to pass, fitted out with a rail, hooks or shelves. A bench with a lift-up lid or drawers under it is another option, so there’s somewhere to sit by the door. Typical reasons to get in touch are storage for coats and shoes in the hallway and a cupboard for the meters with easy access; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

An interwar house tends to have truer walls than a Victorian one, though rarely square corners. Much of the housing around St Mary Cray is interwar, semi-detached or detached, so we still scribe every piece to the wall. Lids, doors and drawers are set level on site so they run true.

Where other trades are needed, for example an electrician to move a socket, we point that out, so it can be arranged before fitting day. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

From workshop to your room

In older rooms, the furniture normally has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site. How long the fitting takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In a 1920s or 1930s house, the hall and stairs are normally straightforward, but the route in is still measured, not just the room. The furniture comes in sections and is put together where it is going.

  1. You get in touch and describe the space.
  2. We visit to measure the space and the route in from the street, including the stairs and doorways.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The cupboards are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections sized for the route.
  5. We bring the sections in and fit them, scribed to the walls.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Keep pets in another room while we work
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are

Arranging a design visit

A quote begins with some details from you: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of photos if you can take them. To send them, tell us about the room on our contact form. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.

What we do not do

Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work are not part of what we do. Please bear these in mind too:

  • Building work or structural changes
  • Plumbing for washing machines or sinks (your plumber)
  • Any gas work around the boiler

If in doubt, you can send us a few details through our contact form and describe the room. Our process from visit to fitting.

What goes into it

  • Adjustable shelves
  • Birch plywood
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Ventilated doors

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

What prompts fitted cupboards in St Mary Cray

When a house gains a utility or boot room, people want it fitted out properly. Washing machines, dryers, coats, boots and cleaning things all need a place, and fitted cupboards can bring order to them.

Here’s what fitted cupboards can help with:

  • Storage in a corner nothing else fits
  • Cupboards for a utility or boot room
  • A neat cupboard around the boiler
  • Landing shelves for bedding and towels

If your children go to Poverest Primary School or a school nearby, fitted cupboards can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?
  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote
  • Where they’ll park and unload

Tips worth knowing

People planning fitted cupboards often ask about these. They help before and after fitting:

  • Leave room in front of the meters
  • Let us know about meters and boilers in the space
  • Leaseholders: check your lease first
  • Have damp sorted before fitting

Keep the way to the meters and fuse board clear. Try not to fill the space in front of them, so engineers and meter readers can get to them quickly.

At the design visit, let us know how parking and access work. Many London streets are in controlled parking zones, and blocks of flats can have rules about lifts and deliveries.

Your questions about fitted cupboards in St Mary Cray

Is St Mary Cray in the area you cover for fitted cupboards?

Yes. We cover all of Bromley and the rest of London, and St Mary Cray is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, followed by a quote.

Do you cover homes near St Mary Cray station?

Yes, homes across Bromley and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.
