Why people ask for fitted wardrobes in South Street

Most people come to us because they’ve simply run out of space. Clothes end up on chairs, in boxes under the bed or in another room. A fitted wardrobe uses the full height of the wall.

People usually get in touch with us about things like these:

  • Several odd pieces where one run of storage would do
  • Space under the eaves going to waste
  • Clothes with nowhere proper to go
  • Standard wardrobes that don’t fill the wall

If you live in a flat close to Oxted station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.

  • Whether the route into your home has been checked
  • Whether you will get a quote in writing, not just a figure
  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work

How to choose a carpenter in London

Fitted wardrobes for homes in South Street

A fitted wardrobe is built into the room itself, running floor to ceiling and wall to wall where the space allows. There is no dusty gap on top and no tricky space at the ends. For a bedroom in South Street, we start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need. We make fitted wardrobes from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are wasted space beside the chimney breast and several odd pieces where one run of storage would do.

Many 1930s houses have had a loft conversion, adding a bedroom under a sloping ceiling, and the slope can take storage cut to its angle. Around South Street, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a large part of the housing. Our part starts once the loft has been converted, and the furniture is scribed to the slope and the walls.

We write quotes in plain English, without jargon. They say what will be made, what it’s made from and how it will be finished, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Mention it when you contact us.

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, as it makes good use of an tricky room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.

What affects the price in South Street

Several things affect the price:

  • The internal fittings
  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • Spray painting or hand painting

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

Getting in touch

These details help when you get in touch:

  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • How you want to use the space
  • Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift

To get a quote, use our contact form and tell us which room you have in mind and what you want the furniture to do. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and a written quote follows.

Questions we’re often asked

Does a conservation area in or near South Street affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

I live near Oxted station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Bromley and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with a few details about the room.

Who chooses the colour?

You do. We agree the colour with you.

Do you do the electrics?

No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.

What finishes do you offer?

There are two options: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. Your quote sets out which you have chosen.

Can I send pictures ahead of the visit?

Yes, they help. Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, especially with rough measurements. To send them, send us a few details through our contact form.

What happens on fitting day

At the end, we tidy up and lift the floor protection. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you and answer any questions. How long the fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. In a 1920s or 1930s house, the hall and stairs are usually straightforward, but the route in is still measured, not just the room. The furniture comes in sections and is put together where it is going, with floors protected throughout.

  1. You get in touch and let us know what you keep in your wardrobes now.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and plan the inside: long hanging, double hanging, shelves and drawers.
  3. The written quote sets out each wardrobe’s inside layout, the doors, the materials and the finish.
  4. The wardrobes are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, ready for the rails, shelves and drawers you chose.
  5. The wardrobes are fitted in your home, spray-painted in the workshop or hand-painted on site, and the inside fittings go in last.

Before fitting day

  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Keep pets in another room while we work

Getting a quote

If you know what you want, say so; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.

What fitted wardrobes can’t fix

We do not treat damp or carry out building work, and there are a few other limits too:

  • Decorating or plastering the room
  • Moving switches or sockets, which needs an electrician
  • Treating damp or mould on the walls

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can drop us a line using the contact form and we will give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.
