Fitted cupboards in Beckenham: what you get

A fitted cupboard is built for one space and nowhere else. It runs from the floor to the ceiling, or to whatever height suits the spot, and it follows the walls rather than leaving gaps around them. We fit them in hallways, on landings, in utility and boot rooms and in alcoves, with the inside planned around what you want to store. Most enquiries start with a boiler cupboard that keeps access clear and landing shelves for bedding and towels, and the answer is made in our workshop from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

In an older home, panelled doors and painted mouldings may suit; in a newer one, plain flat doors may fit better. For a home in Beckenham, door styles are talked through at the measuring visit. You choose the colour, spray-painted in the workshop or hand-painted on site.

Where other trades are needed, for example an electrician to move a socket, we point that out. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Bespoke fitted cupboards or ready-made?

You can put together a flat-pack cupboard yourself, which is a fair point in their favour. A fitted cupboard needs a design visit, a quote, workshop time and fitting, and in return the cupboard is built for your home. Ready-made pieces come with a fixed inside layout, which may not suit what you need to store. With fitted furniture, the inside is planned around what you keep.

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, and the quote follows.

Could you do it yourself?

Cost matters, and it is fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture typically costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

What we don’t do

We don’t treat damp or carry out building work, and there are a few other limits too:

  • Moving gas or electricity meters
  • Plastering, decorating or repairs to the walls
  • Any plumbing in a utility room

Questions from Beckenham

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Beckenham?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It is useful to tell us about parking during the design visit.

How do you fit fitted cupboards in a flat in Beckenham?

We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Fitted cupboards are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Can you fit cupboards to walls that aren’t straight?

Yes, it’s something we deal with all the time. Few walls in a period house are straight, so we scribe and level every cupboard.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two ways to finish it: by spray or by hand. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

Who chooses the colour?

You do. The paint colour is agreed with you, and it’s set out in the quote.

Can a fitted cupboard cover the meters and fuse board?

Yes, while keeping access clear. Engineers and meter readers will need access, so we design doors or removable panels for that.

Making use of awkward spaces in Beckenham

Homes built between 1945 and 1972 make up about 25% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Beckenham, with about 25% built between 1973 and 1999, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. 10 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of the centre of Beckenham. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. Purpose-built flats are more common around Beckenham than across Bromley: about 50% of households, against about 23%, the 2021 Census shows. That puts the stairs, lifts and doors on the route in at the centre of the plan.

Bromley Palace, about 2.1 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, fitted cupboards can fill recesses that are rarely a standard size. Near listed buildings like Parish Church of St George, under half a mile north-east of the centre of Beckenham, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted cupboards can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. For a flat near Beckenham Junction station, the route in is measured as well as the room, and the sections are sized to fit it.

Before and after fitting day

People planning fitted cupboards often ask about these. They help whatever the room:

  • Do not store things against the boiler
  • Have damp sorted before fitting
  • Leaseholders: check your lease first
  • Check stairs, landings and doorways for access

Your needs may change once the cupboards are in use. Shelves can be set at heights that suit you as your storage changes.

At the design visit, let us know how parking and access work. Many London streets are in controlled parking zones, and blocks of flats can have rules about lifts and deliveries.

From workshop to your room

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it is going into, and that happens on fitting day. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, until the line is tight. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the cupboards and the room, and your quote sets out the fitting days. For a flat, building rules and lift booking are worth checking early; for a house, steps, paths and parking are the things to mention. Either way, the day is planned at the design visit. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

  1. First, you let us know about the space and what you need to store.
  2. We visit, take careful measurements and go through the design with you. For a boiler cupboard, we plan for the clearances and ventilation in the manufacturer’s instructions.
  3. We send a quote that sets out the design, the materials and the finish, for you to read through.
  4. The cupboards are made in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We bring the cupboards to your home and fit them to the space. We check each door and shelf with you before we leave.
