How we make fitted home offices for South Hornchurch

An alcove beside a chimney breast can take a neat desk with shelves above. The desk and shelves are scribed to the alcove, as period walls are seldom flat. The other alcove can hold matching cupboards or bookshelves. It gives a home in South Hornchurch a workspace that looks part of the room. People normally come to us about cables trailing across the desk and floor and no way to put work away, and the answer is made in our workshop from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

If you live in one of the post-war homes around South Hornchurch, the spare room may be small but regular in shape. A desk along one wall, shelves above and a cupboard for the printer can fit even a small room. Cable routes are planned before anything is fixed, and any new sockets are a job for your electrician.

You get the quote in writing, so you can read it at your own pace. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Honest limits

Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work are not part of what we do. There are a few other points to bear in mind:

  • Setting up computers, screens or networks
  • Converting a loft to make room for an office
  • Changes to the structure of the house

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can get in touch through our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

How fitting day works

Once the main sections are fixed in place, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly, then checked again. How long the fitting takes depends on how much desk, shelving and storage you want, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Post-war homes often have concrete or block walls, so the right fixings are part of the plan for fitting day. Floors and doorways are protected while the sections come in.

  1. To begin, drop us a line using the contact form; a brief note on the room and your desk set-up is plenty.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room, agree the desk height and depth and plan cable routes to the sockets. New sockets or wiring are a job for your electrician, ideally before fitting.
  3. A written quote follows with the design, materials and finish.
  4. We make the desk and storage in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with cable holes and routes built in.
  5. We fit it in your home, scribed and set level, with the finish sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.

How to prepare

  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away

Advice

Your questions about fitted home offices in South Hornchurch

I live near Rainham (Essex) station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Havering and the rest of London. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Do you make fitted home offices for homes in South Hornchurch?

Yes, South Hornchurch is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Havering and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.

What happens at the measuring visit?

It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, then send a quote in writing.

Do pictures help?

Yes, they help. Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, particularly with rough measurements. To send them, drop us a line using the contact form.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps, which helps avoid condensation and mould. If there is damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

Do I need permission to fit furniture in a leasehold flat?

Possibly. A lease can require consent for alterations. We can’t advise on leases, so please check yours.

Caring for painted furniture

Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it’s worth looking after. Here are a few tips worth knowing:

  • List the equipment you use, from screens to printers
  • Think about what will sit on the shelves
  • Check whether you’ll need new sockets
  • Consider doors to hide work at the end of the day

Load shelves evenly, with heavier books and files at the ends near the supports. It helps shelves stay straight. The shelves are made for what you said you’d keep on them.

Hot mugs can mark paint, so a coaster is a good habit. Mop up spills quickly. A mat protects the area you use most.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

If you only need a simple desk against a straight wall, an off-the-shelf desk may be enough. A fitted office earns its place where the space is awkward or the storage matters. We’ll give you an honest view at the measuring visit. In a flat with stairs or a small lift, large flat-pack units can be hard to get in, whereas fitted furniture is made in sections sized for the way in. The sections are joined once inside.

Parking is part of the price picture in London. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension. It helps to talk about parking during the design visit, so it can be planned.

South Hornchurch homes and fitted home offices

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around South Hornchurch were built between 1945 and 1972 (about 47%) and since 2000 (about 28%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. That matters for home offices, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Since the zone was extended to the outer boroughs in August 2023, the whole of London has been inside the ULEZ. So any van that delivers or fits furniture in South Hornchurch is covered by it. Parking and access are planned at the design visit. Strict stopping rules apply on red routes, which TfL runs. If your street in South Hornchurch joins a main road, it is worth telling us during the design visit. Then we can work out where to load and unload.

How we price fitted home offices

Prices vary from room to room, for these reasons:

  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • Spray painting or hand painting

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, and that’s part of the price. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured.

What we need to know

A little information at the start saves time later. Where you can, include:

  • Any ideas or images you’ve saved
  • How you want to use the space
  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, when we’ve measured up and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.
