Fitted wardrobes in RM12: how it works

You can choose hinged or sliding doors. With hinged doors, you see a full section when you open them. Sliding doors suit tighter rooms, but only part of the inside is open at any one time. We weigh them up with you at the design visit. Typical reasons to get in touch are wasted space beside the chimney breast and not enough hanging space, and the answer is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

There is not much for you to do on fitting day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and the room should already be cleared, as agreed at the design visit. After that, it is over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and your quote sets out the fitting days.

  1. You get in touch about fitted wardrobes for your bedroom, with a rough idea of what you need to hang and fold.
  2. We visit to measure up and plan the doors, rails, shelves and drawers with you. Hinged or sliding doors are part of that conversation.
  3. We send a quote in writing with the layout, materials and finish.
  4. We build the wardrobes in our workshop, in sections sized to get into your home.
  5. Fitting day: the wardrobes go in, are levelled and scribed, and the doors are hung.

How our quotes work

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

Local landmarks in Hornchurch

Around Hornchurch, we cover homes near Saint George's Church, Abbs Cross Academy and Arts College and J.J. Moon's pub, among other places. Nearby too are Langtons Infant School (under half a mile north-east) and St. Andrew's Park (0.7 miles north-east). The nearest railway station is Emerson Park station, about 0.7 miles north. Nearby you will also find The Brewery (1.8 miles north-west) and Upminster Tithe Barn Museum of Nostalgia (1.9 miles east). For a walk, there is Hornchurch Cutting.

Bedroom storage across RM12

From Hornchurch, Elm Park and South Hornchurch to the quieter streets, bedrooms across RM12 range from box rooms to large rooms with bays. Each design uses the room’s own widths and height. The inside layout is planned around your things.

The biggest shares of homes in RM12 were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 52%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 24%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. About 52% of homes in the RM12 postcode district date from between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Many interwar houses have a small room over the stairs, which suits fitted storage made around its bulkhead. Detached and semi-detached houses are home to about 54% of households in RM12, based on Census 2021. In a semi or detached house, a driveway, where there is one, can make unloading easier.

The ULEZ has covered every London borough since August 2023, and TfL’s red routes have strict stopping rules, so access to homes in RM12 is planned beforehand.

Hornchurch: Hare Hall, about 1.8 miles north, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Parish Church of St Andrew, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

When is bespoke worth it?

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

It is worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

What we don’t do

Damp treatment and building work are for other specialists, so these points are worth knowing:

  • Decorating or plastering the room
  • Structural changes to the room
  • Fixing the cause of condensation or damp

Do you need fitted wardrobes?

Most people come to us because they’ve simply run out of space. Clothes end up on chairs, in boxes under the bed or in another room. A fitted wardrobe uses the full height of the wall.

If you recognise any of these, it is worth talking to us:

  • Storage boxes stacked under the bed
  • Standard wardrobes that don’t fill the wall
  • Wardrobes that are full to bursting
  • A bedroom that never feels tidy

Practical tips

Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after with a little care. These habits help most:

  • Think about where you will keep shoes, bags and folded clothes
  • Clear the wall where the wardrobes will go before fitting day
  • In a leasehold flat, read the lease first
  • Check the route into your flat, not just the room

Painted wardrobe doors only need a soft cloth that’s barely damp. Skip scouring pads and harsh cleaners, which can mark the finish.

Do not dry washing inside a wardrobe or in the bedroom with the doors shut, as the extra moisture can lead to condensation. Opening a window now and then helps.

What affects the price in RM12

To work out the quote, we look at:

  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • The internal fittings
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

Getting in touch

To give us a picture of the room, it helps to include:

  • A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • Rough measurements: width, height and depth

Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and talk through the design with you, and the written quote comes after. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. To book a design visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Questions from RM12

Do you make good the walls afterwards?

No. We do not plaster or decorate, so any work on the walls is for a plasterer or decorator. The furniture is finished by spray or by hand, as agreed in your quote.

Can I choose the layout inside the wardrobe?

You choose the mix of hanging, shelves and drawers. Long hanging, double hanging, shelves, drawers and shoe space can all be included, in the proportions you need. We talk it through during the design visit.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two choices: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. The finish is agreed in your quote.

How do I get a quote for fitted wardrobes in RM12?

Simply fill in our short enquiry form. Rough sizes and a few photos help, and then we arrange a visit to measure and go through the design.

Who chooses the colour?

You choose it. The paint colour is agreed with you.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Let us know when you first get in touch, and we’ll see what we can do.

Can a fitted wardrobe go against a cold wall?

Yes. We plan ventilation behind and inside wardrobes on external walls, in moisture-resistant MDF. If there is damp on the wall already, it should be sorted first.
