How fitting day works

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. In a post-war block of flats, the route in may include communal stairs, landings and a lift, so built-in bookshelves are made in sections sized for each. If the building has rules on lift use or working hours, it helps to tell us during the design visit.

  1. It starts when you tell us about the wall and your books.
  2. At the design visit we measure and plan the shelves together.
  3. Your written quote follows, covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. We make the shelving in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home and go through it with you before we leave. Fresh paint needs time to cure, so it’s best to load the shelves gently at first.

How to prepare

  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day

How we make built-in bookshelves for South Hornchurch

The right depth depends on your books. Paperbacks sit happily on shallow shelves, while art books, atlases and records need more. Deep shelves let small books disappear behind each other, while shallow ones leave large books overhanging. Deeper cupboards below and shallower shelves above often work well. We make built-in bookshelves from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and people most often get in touch about space for art books and records and bare walls that could hold shelving.

Many homes around South Hornchurch date from the post-war decades, and London’s post-war housing includes flats in low- and high-rise blocks as well as houses. Post-war walls tend to be truer than older ones, but ceilings and floors still get measured, as nothing is assumed. For TV and media walls, cable routes are planned before the walls are drilled.

Our quotes are written in plain words, without jargon. You will see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, all taken from the design visit.

Your questions about built-in bookshelves in South Hornchurch

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in South Hornchurch?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Rainham (Essex) station?

Yes, homes across Havering and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Does my lease affect fitted furniture?

Possibly. A lease can require consent for alterations. We cannot advise on leases, so please check yours.

Can shelves go around a radiator?

It needs planning. Any shelving over or around a radiator needs room for the heat to move into the room. If you’d rather move it, that is for a plumber, and is best done before we fit.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two choices: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. The finish is agreed in your quote.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Let us know when you first get in touch, and we will see what we can do.

Practical tips

Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after with a little care. These habits help most:

  • Tell us about parking and access during the design visit
  • Think about whether a radiator should move before fitting
  • Estimate how many metres of books you have
  • Consider deeper cupboards at the bottom

Fill the shelves evenly rather than all at once. Put the heaviest books on lower shelves and near uprights.

Do not load shelves beyond what they were planned for. If you plan to add a heavy collection later, say so at the measuring visit.

What it is made from

Moisture-resistant MDF

MDF gives crisp edges and smooth faces, ready for spray or hand painting. The moisture-resistant grade is our choice.

Spray-painted finish

Spraying in the workshop means the shelves arrive already painted. Treat the shelves gently while the paint cures.

Do you need built-in bookshelves in South Hornchurch?

Some people are tired of shelves that bow and bookcases that lean. A bowing shelf is normally too thin or too long for what it carries. Bespoke shelves are sized for the span and the weight.

If you recognise any of these, it’s worth talking to us:

  • Empty alcoves that could hold books
  • Shelves that sag under books
  • Shelves packed two rows deep
  • Shelving behind a desk for books and files

If you live in a period home close to St John's Parish Church, picture rails and cornices give built-in bookshelves a line to finish at.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • Can you see real work of theirs?
  • Will the doors close with even gaps?
  • Will the quote be in writing?

Our checklist for choosing a carpenter

When you need someone else

We’re carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:

  • Decorating the rest of the room
  • Relocating radiators or pipework
  • Plastering, which is a plasterer’s job

If in doubt, you can drop us a line using the contact form and describe the room. How a job runs, step by step.
