About fitted wardrobes in KT19
In older bedrooms, the chimney breast alcoves are often the obvious place for clothes. A pair of alcove wardrobes keeps the chimney breast as a feature, scribed to follow the uneven walls. Picture rails and cornices can be met neatly or cut around. Most enquiries start with gaps above and around standalone wardrobes and storage boxes stacked under the bed; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.
There is not much for you to do on fitting day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and it helps to have the room cleared beforehand. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and the fitting days are set out in your quote.
- You describe the bedroom and the storage you need.
- We come to measure and talk through hanging heights, doors and drawers.
- A quote in writing follows. It lists what’s inside each wardrobe as well as the doors.
- We then make the wardrobes in our workshop, ready for spraying or for hand painting on site.
- The wardrobes are fitted in your home, ready to use.
What affects the price in KT19
No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

Homes across KT19 and their bedrooms
In KT19, a spare room often doubles as a study or a guest room. The design can help one room work two ways.
In KT19, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 43%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 35%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how fitted wardrobes are fixed and fitted. More than a third of the homes in the KT19 postcode district (about 43%) date from between 1919 and 1939, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Many interwar houses have a small room over the stairs, which suits fitted storage made around its bulkhead. Around a third of the homes in the KT19 postcode district (about 35%) were built between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Post-war bedrooms are typically simple shapes, which suits fitted furniture along a whole wall, with fixings chosen for concrete, block or brick.
Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones run by the boroughs, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges. Let us know about parking at the measuring visit.
Chessington: Fitznells Manor, about 2.2 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design. For a family home near Castle Hill Primary School, the inside of fitted wardrobes can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow.
Do you need fitted wardrobes?
Couples often want storage that works for two. We can plan separate sections for each person.
We are often asked to help with:
- Condensation behind a wardrobe on an outside wall
- A bedroom that never feels tidy
- Gaps above and around standalone wardrobes
- A tight bedroom where doors get in the way
Is bespoke worth it?
Bought wardrobes come in the maker’s finishes. We paint fitted wardrobes in the colour you choose, spray painted or hand painted. Bespoke work does take longer than buying from a shop.
What to check before you book
- Real projects you can actually look at
- Whether you will get a quote in writing, not just a figure
- Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
- How they handle walls that are not straight
Could you do it yourself?
The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t typically do that in an older room.
If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.
Honest limits
We make and fit furniture, and we don’t do electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering or structural work. There are a few other points to bear in mind:
- Redecorating around the wardrobes
- Fixing the cause of condensation or damp
- Taking out a chimney breast to make space
Tips worth knowing
Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. Here are a few tips worth knowing:
- Think about whether hinged doors will clear the bed
- For a flat, measure the stairs, landings and lift
- Check your lease before fixing furniture to walls in a leasehold flat
- Count how much long hanging and short hanging you need
Painted doors feel dry quickly but take longer to cure fully. For the first while, open and close the doors gently.
Don’t dry washing inside a wardrobe or in the bedroom with the doors shut. A little ventilation in the room helps.
Questions we’re often asked
Do you move sockets or add lighting?
No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.
Can I choose the layout inside the wardrobe?
You choose the mix of hanging, shelves and drawers. Long hanging, double hanging, shelves, drawers and shoe space can all be included, in the proportions you need. We talk it through at the measuring visit.
Is it OK to put a wardrobe on an outside wall?
Yes, as long as it is ventilated. External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we allow for airflow behind and inside the wardrobe, which helps avoid condensation.
Can you fit wardrobes under a sloping ceiling?
Yes. The wardrobe is shaped to the ceiling line, with long hanging where there’s height and shelves or drawers where it is lower. It turns tricky space into storage.
Should I send photos?
Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit, along with rough sizes. It helps to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.
How long does it take to fit wardrobes?
It depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. The wardrobes are made in our workshop first.
Will a sloping floor cause problems for fitted wardrobes?
Floors in older houses are often out of level. We set fitted wardrobes level on a plinth or adjustable feet and the doors line up.
