Fitted home offices in Chessington: what you get

Storage keeps a home office calm. We can plan drawers, file storage, a cupboard for the printer and shelving, so the desk stays clear. Doors can hide the working things when you’re done. For a home in Chessington, we design it all around what you need to store. If you’re living with flimsy shelves that won’t take the weight and a laptop that moves from room to room, home offices made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand can solve it.

A good part of the housing around Chessington is interwar, semi-detached or detached. If yours is a 1920s or 1930s house, the box room over the stairs is a classic home office, with a bulkhead in the floor that the desk can be built around. Shelving, a desk and closed storage can all fit a room like that.

We write quotes in plain English. They say what will be made, what it’s made from and how it will be finished, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

Where other trades come in

We’re carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. It helps to know these before you plan the job:

  • Any wiring or new lights, which need an electrician
  • Making good the walls, which is for a plasterer or decorator
  • Setting up computers, screens or networks

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can drop us a line using the contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer. How a job runs, step by step.

What goes into it

  • Cable routes
  • Spray-painted finish

What prompts fitted home offices in Chessington

Clutter on the desk is a common reason to get in touch. Purpose-made storage gives files, books and stationery a home. The desk stays clear for work.

If you recognise any of these, it is worth talking to us:

  • Paperwork and files with nowhere to go
  • A desk in the wrong light
  • A spare room that has to be an office and a guest room
  • Flimsy shelves that won’t take the weight

For families living near Castle Hill Primary School, a desk with shelves and closed storage can serve both work and homework.

How to choose a carpenter in London

Working from home in Chessington

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 43% of the housing in the streets around Chessington, with about 35% built between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Chessington include Church of St Mary the Virgin (Grade II), under half a mile south, and Orchard Court (Grade II), under half a mile north-west. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, such as fixing into original panelling. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. More than a third of the homes in the neighbourhood around Chessington (about 43%) date from between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Many interwar houses have a small room over the stairs that suits a built-in desk, built around the bulkhead.

If you live in a flat close to Chessington North station, the route in is measured not just the room, and the sections are sized to fit it. Close to Horton Country Park? A desk placed to make the most of daylight makes a big difference to a working day.

Questions we are often asked

Do you make fitted home offices for homes in Chessington?

Yes, we work across Kingston upon Thames, Chessington included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with a few details.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Chessington?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.

What are your built-in desks made from?

The office is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. The desk, shelves and drawer boxes are birch plywood, which is strong and holds screws well, while the doors and panels are MDF, which paints well. Everything is finished by spray painting or hand painting.

What happens during the design visit?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and go through the design with you. We will also ask about access and parking.

How long is the fitting for a home office?

The time the fitting takes depends on how much desk, shelving and storage you want, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Because everything is made at our workshop, the work in your home is the fitting itself. We work tidily and keep the room as clear as we can.

Who chooses the colour?

You choose it. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you’ve chosen.

How fitting day works

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and fitting day is where that happens. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the layout and how many pieces make up the office, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Interwar houses usually have a straight run of stairs and a reasonable hallway, though we still measure the route in not just the room. Home offices arrive in sections and are assembled in place.

  1. It starts when you get in touch about a home office.
  2. At the design visit, we look at the room, the window and your equipment.
  3. Your quote sets out the design, the materials and the finish. You can ask us about any part of it.
  4. We make the desk, shelves and cupboards in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The office is fitted and set level, ready for your first day at the desk.

Before fitting day

  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician beforehand
  • Empty the space we will be working in
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager

Advice

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths.

Boards, parts and paint

Birch plywood

Shelves full of books and files carry real weight. Birch plywood suits them, as it’s strong and stiff. Where the span is long, we add thickness or support.

Shelves

Shelves in a home office carry books, files and folders. How far a shelf spans and what it holds both count. We size each shelf to carry its load without sagging.
