About our loft storage in Chessington

Many loft rooms are bedrooms, and storage for clothes is the first need. Wardrobes under the slope, drawers in the knee wall and shelves in the dormer can all work together. Planned together, they make the room feel ordered. For a home in Chessington, it’s planned around your things. Typical reasons to get in touch are a sloping ceiling with no room for a wardrobe and ready-made wardrobes too big for the stairs; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

Coats, shoes, bags and the vacuum cleaner all need somewhere to go in a family house. With interwar houses, semis and detached homes a large part of the housing around Chessington, fitted storage near the front door can take much of it. Anything that needs to stay reachable, like meters or a fuse board, is designed around.

If the job needs another trade, such as an electrician or a plumber, we will tell you. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

What prompts loft storage in Chessington

Some people have a boarded loft and want proper shelving. Storage in a boarded loft keeps everything organised. It is ideal for things you need now and then.

We’re often asked to help with:

  • Clothes with nowhere to go in a loft bedroom
  • Standard furniture that will not go up the loft stairs
  • Low eaves that nobody can use
  • A new loft conversion that needs storage

Close to Horton Country Park? Eaves cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things.

Before you choose who makes it

  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room
  • Whether they measure the room themselves
  • How they handle walls that aren’t straight
  • Will the doors close with even gaps?

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job.

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is typically a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.

Flats, leases and landlords

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants. An agent can arrange access for you, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Tell us about them at the measuring visit, so fitting day is planned around them.

From workshop to your room

Every fitting follows the same order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on how much storage you want in the loft, and your quote sets out the fitting days. A front path or side gate can make the carry from the van simpler. Gates, paths and steps up to the door are part of the route we measure. Floors are covered from the door to the room, and the sections are assembled in place.

  1. You let us know about your converted or boarded loft, including the eaves and any dormer.
  2. We measure the eaves, the slopes and the stairs up to the loft.
  3. We agree the cupboards, drawers and wardrobes, and send a quote in writing, with the finish set out.
  4. Every part is made at our workshop, ready for a spray-painted or hand-painted finish. It is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We carry it up, fit it and check every door and drawer with you. Any hand painting is done in the loft.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall

Ask for a quote

The design visit is where every quote starts. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and talk through the design with you. Afterwards, we send a written quote for you to look over. To arrange the visit, use our contact form.

Storage in Chessington homes: local notes

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 43% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Chessington, with about 35% built between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Near the centre of Chessington, Historic England’s list includes Church of St Mary the Virgin (Grade II), less than half a mile south, and Orchard Court (Grade II), under half a mile north-west. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, can need listed building consent. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. The Ultra Low Emission Zone has covered all of London since it reached the outer boroughs on 29 August 2023. So any van that delivers or fits furniture in Chessington is covered by it. We go through parking and access at the design visit.

If you live in a flat close to Chessington North station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. Fitznells Manor, about 2.2 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, eaves cupboards in a converted loft are scribed to slopes that are rarely even.

Chessington is within the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames, about 4 miles north of Kingston upon Thames. We cover Chessington as part of our work across Kingston upon Thames, and the process is the same everywhere we work. Our Kingston upon Thames coverage includes Chessington.

Every address in KT9, KT19 and KT6 is within our area for loft storage, from the main roads to the quieter streets. Streets in the area include Elm Road, Cox Lane and Moor Lane, and homes on each of them are within our area for loft storage. Chessington sits close to the A243. If your home is on one of them, tell us during the design visit, as some main roads have strict stopping rules. Neighbouring places we cover for loft storage include Tolworth (2 miles north-east) and Surbiton (2 miles north). Across the rest of Kingston upon Thames, our area takes in Kingston upon Thames (4 miles north), New Malden (3 miles north-east), Hampton Wick (3 miles north), Norbiton (3 miles north), Seething Wells (2 miles north) and Surbiton Park (3 miles north).

Your questions about loft storage in Chessington

I live near Chessington North station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Kingston upon Thames and the rest of London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Chessington?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It is useful to tell us about parking at the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?

That is normal in older homes, and it’s what scribing is for. We scribe the edges to follow the wall and set the furniture level on adjustable feet or a plinth.

How much does loft storage cost?

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Drawers in the knee wall usually involve more work than simple cupboards, and the finish matters too. We set it all out in a quote in writing.

Do you carry out loft conversions?

No. Our work is storage in loft rooms that are already converted, or in boarded lofts. A conversion is building work, and Building Regulations apply. When the room is finished, we can plan the storage.

Who chooses the colour?

The choice is yours, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you’ve chosen.

What loft storage cannot fix

We are carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. It’s useful to know these before you plan the job:

  • New sockets, lights or wiring, which are for your electrician
  • Fixing damp or ventilation problems in the eaves
  • Loft conversions, which we do not carry out

Not sure whether your space suits loft storage? You can get in touch through our contact form and we’ll tell you before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.
