Fitted Wardrobes in Chessington

Fitted wardrobes in Chessington: floor-to-ceiling wardrobes built to the shape of your bedroom. We visit to measure and go through the design, make the furniture in our workshop and fit it.

  • Condensation behind a wardrobe on an outside wall
  • Dusty space on top of the wardrobe
  • Mismatched bedroom furniture

Flats, blocks and rented homes

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. If there is a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Mention it when you contact us.

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We cannot give advice on leases, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

About our fitted wardrobes in Chessington

An outside wall is often colder than an inside one, and clothes pressed against a cold wall can lead to condensation. Where a wardrobe goes on an external wall, we plan ventilation behind and inside it, which helps keep mould away. Moisture-resistant MDF is a sensible choice there too. If your home has a bedroom that never feels tidy and storage boxes stacked under the bed, that’s what fitted wardrobes are for, made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

The front bedroom in many 1920s and 1930s houses sits above a bay, which leaves the side walls for storage and the bay for light. Interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a big part of the housing around Chessington, so that shape of room is worth knowing. We measure every wall, even where the room looks square.

Where other trades are needed, for example an electrician to move a socket, we point that out, so it can be arranged before fitting day. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

How we price fitted wardrobes

When we put a quote together, we consider:

  • The overall size of the piece
  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • The number of doors and drawers

Rooms that are not square take more work: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. The quote allows for it, written once we have measured up.

Helping us understand the room

Getting some details early makes the visit more useful. If you can, send:

  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Any ideas or images you have saved
  • Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit. To arrange a visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Common questions about fitted wardrobes

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Chessington North station?

Yes, homes across Kingston upon Thames and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with some details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Can you make fitted wardrobes for a home in Chessington?

Yes, Chessington is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Kingston upon Thames and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement. Let us know when you first get in touch, and we will see what we can do.

How is the price worked out?

Size, doors and drawers, what goes inside and the finish all affect it, along with access and parking. The price comes in a quote in writing after the design visit.

Which is better for fitted wardrobes, hinged or sliding doors?

Both work well, depending on the space. Hinged doors open a whole section at once but need room in front to swing, while sliding doors save space but only open part of the wardrobe at a time. We will help you weigh them up when we visit.

Do I choose the paint colour?

The choice is yours, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you have chosen.

Why bespoke in Chessington?

To be fair, modular wardrobe systems are easy to reconfigure. A bespoke interior is planned around what you own, and we can include adjustable shelves where you want flexibility. Ready-made furniture rarely suits a bay, a box room or a bulkhead over the stairs, and interwar homes often have all three. Built-in pieces are designed to fit them.

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space.

What you get with us

From workshop to your room

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site, so it sits neatly against the room. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Interwar houses typically have a straight run of stairs and a reasonable hallway, though we still measure the route in not just the room. The furniture comes in sections and is put together where it is going.

  1. To begin, drop us a line using the contact form; a brief note on the bedroom and what you need to store is enough.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and plan the inside: long hanging, double hanging, shelves and drawers.
  3. A quote in writing follows, listing the layout inside, the doors and the finish.
  4. The wardrobes are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, ready for the rails, shelves and drawers you chose.
  5. We fit the wardrobes in your home, then put in the rails, shelves and drawers at the heights we agreed.

How to prepare

  • Empty the space we will be working in
  • Let us know about parking near your home
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

It’s worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is usually cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

Bedrooms in Chessington: local notes

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 43% of the housing in the streets around Chessington, with about 35% built between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Near the centre of Chessington, Historic England’s list includes Church of St Mary the Virgin (Grade II), under half a mile south, and Orchard Court (Grade II), less than half a mile north-west. For a listed home, internal works that affect its character can need listed building consent from the council, for instance removing or fixing into original panelling. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. About 32% of households around Chessington live in terraced houses, well above the figure for Kingston upon Thames as a whole, about 17%, based on Census 2021. Terraces bring narrow halls and tight stairs, so fitted wardrobes are made in sections that fit.

If you live in a flat close to Chessington North station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. Fitznells Manor, about 2.2 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design. For families living near Castle Hill Primary School, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller.
