Living-room storage in Blendon

About 63% of the homes in the streets around Blendon went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 22% between 1945 and 1972, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Blendon include Jays Cottages (Grade II), less than half a mile north, and Chapel House (Grade II), less than half a mile north-west. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, such as fixing into original panelling. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. More than half of the homes in the area around Blendon (about 63%) date from between 1919 and 1939, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Houses from the 1920s and 1930s often have a bay window and a chimney breast in the front room, and TV and media units are planned around both.

Danson House, about 0.7 miles north, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for TV and media units. If you live in a period home close to St James the Great, picture rails and cornices give TV and media units a line to finish at. Close to Danson Park? TV and media units can be arranged to keep the window and the light clear.

TV and media units in Blendon

The screen size comes first. We plan the space around the TV you have, or the one you expect to buy, with a margin so it is not a tight squeeze. The height of the screen matters as well: it should suit where you sit, not just the wall. Typical reasons to get in touch are wasted space around the screen and a screen at the wrong height; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

A typical 1930s semi has a bay window at the front and a chimney breast with a recess either side. Interwar, semi-detached and detached houses make up a big part of the housing around Blendon, so that layout is worth knowing well. We tend to plan TV and media units along the chimney breast wall so the bay keeps its light.

You get the quote in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and talk it over at home. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Before and after fitting day

Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it’s worth looking after. Here are a few tips worth knowing:

  • Count your equipment, including routers and consoles
  • Decide where you will sit, so the screen height suits it
  • Decide whether the TV will be wall-mounted or stand on the unit
  • Think about which things need to be seen by a remote

Use the access panels and cable routes when you add or change leads rather than drilling new holes. It keeps everything neat.

Label cables when you set things up to make future changes easier.

What affects the price in Blendon

Not every room costs the same, and it comes down to:

  • The overall size of the piece
  • Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • Parking near your home

Rooms that aren’t square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it.

Getting in touch

Here’s what helps us most when you contact us:

  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • Examples of the look you are after

If you know what you want, say so; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, fill in our short enquiry form.

Your questions about TV and media units in Blendon

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Blendon?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, so we can plan the day around it.

I live near Albany Park station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Bexley and the rest of London. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Can the TV be wall-mounted with a unit around it?

The unit can be planned either way. If the TV is wall-mounted, panels and shelves are arranged around the bracket and cables or we size the top for a TV that stands on it.

How long are you in the house for fitting?

The time on site depends on the length of the TV wall and what it needs to hold, and your quote sets out the fitting days. We will talk you through what to expect beforehand.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two options: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. The finish is agreed in your quote.

My walls are not straight. Is that a problem?

That’s normal in older homes, and it is what scribing is for. We scribe the edges to follow the wall and set the furniture level on adjustable feet or a plinth.

What TV and media units cannot fix

We’re carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:

  • Aerial, satellite or broadband installation
  • Connecting and setting up your equipment
  • Plastering or decorating around the unit

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can message us from the contact page and we’ll give you a straight answer. Our process from visit to fitting.

From workshop to your room

You will not need to do much on the day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and it helps to have the room cleared beforehand, as agreed at the design visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Semis and detached houses often have a front path or a side gate, which can make carrying in easier. Gates, paths and steps up to the door are part of the route we measure. Floors, stairs and doorways are protected on the way in, and the sections are assembled in place.

  1. You get in touch about a built-in TV unit.
  2. At the design visit we agree the layout and talk about colour and finish.
  3. A written quote follows, with the finish set out.
  4. We build the unit in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood; a spray-painted finish is applied there for a smooth, even surface.
  5. We fit it in your home; a hand-painted finish is applied once it’s in and is easy to touch up later.

Getting ready for fitting day

Materials and finishes

Moisture-resistant MDF

Wide panels around a screen need to stay flat. MDF gives a smooth surface for a painted finish with crisp edges.

Doors and drawer fronts

Drawers keep controllers and games tidy. Fronts are painted to match the unit.
