TV and media units for homes in Welling

In many period living rooms, the chimney breast and its two alcoves shape the whole wall. The alcoves can take cupboards for equipment and shelves above leaving the TV in an alcove or on the breast. We keep any vent in the chimney breast clear. If your home has bought furniture that doesn’t suit the room and games, controllers and remotes everywhere, that’s what TV and media units are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

In an area like Welling, where interwar homes or semis make up much of the housing, many living rooms have been opened up to the dining room behind. That leaves a long room with a chimney breast on one side, which suits TV and media units along that wall. Cable routes for a TV or speakers, and space for set-top boxes, are planned during the design visit.

Once you’ve read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made at our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so every detail can be checked first.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it is quick to buy.

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.

Living-room carpentry in Welling: local notes

About 75% of the homes in the area around Welling went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 9% between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Near the centre of Welling, Historic England’s list includes Danson Park Mansion (Grade I), less than half a mile south-east. For a listed home, works inside that affect its character can require listed building consent from the council, for instance removing or fixing into original panelling. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. On TfL’s red routes, the rules on stopping and loading are strict. If your home in Welling is on or near a main road, tell us at the measuring visit. We’ll plan where the van can stop.

If you live near Danson Park, TV and media units can be arranged to keep the window and the light clear. For a flat near Welling station, TV and media units are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. For an older house near St John's Church, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for TV and media units.

Materials and finishes

Doors and drawer fronts

Many remote controls need a clear view of the box, so we may leave those shelves open.

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting often suits units in older houses. The colour is agreed with you.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways along with the room itself, so each section is sized to get through.

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Mention it when you get in touch.

How fitting works for TV and media units

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference. After that, it is fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that is solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

  1. You send us a note about the room and the unit you’d like.
  2. We visit to measure and talk through the design and how the unit should look in the room.
  3. You get a quote in writing covering the design, the materials and the finish.
  4. The unit is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF, which takes paint well, and birch plywood.
  5. The unit is fitted and scribed to the walls, and any hand painting is done in the room.

Preparing the room

  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand

Tips worth knowing

People planning TV and media units often ask about these. They help whatever the room:

  • Choose how the TV will sit before the design is finished
  • Think about the viewing height from your sofa
  • Think about whether you will upgrade the screen
  • Check each box’s guidance on ventilation and clearances

Painted finishes feel dry quickly but take longer to cure fully. At first, lift boxes and speakers into place rather than pushing them, so the paint isn’t scuffed.

Tag each lead at both ends.

Common questions about TV and media units

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Welling?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.

I live near Welling station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Bexley and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with some details about the room.

Does my lease affect fitted furniture?

Possibly. Some leases need the building owner’s consent before you make alterations. Check your lease, as we can’t advise on it.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You do. We agree the colour with you, and it’s set out in the quote.

How long does it take to fit a TV unit?

The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We will talk you through what to expect beforehand.

Can I send pictures ahead of the visit?

Yes, they help. Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, particularly with rough measurements. To send them, tell us about the room on our contact form.
