TV and Media Units in Coldblow

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. Our work on TV and media units in Coldblow starts with a design visit, and everything is made in our workshop.

  • Alcoves either side of the chimney breast going to waste
  • A TV that looks out of place in the room
  • Somewhere to keep games tidy

TV and media units in Coldblow

TV units are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood in our workshop. The finish is spray painted in the workshop or hand painted, in a colour agreed with you. We work across London, including Coldblow once the design and quote are agreed. Most enquiries start with games, controllers and remotes everywhere and space for a soundbar and speakers; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

Around Coldblow, interwar houses or semi-detached and detached homes make up a good part of the housing. If yours is a 1920s or 1930s house, the front room may have a bay window at one end and a chimney breast on the side wall, which decides where TV and media units sit. Walls in houses of that age are usually straighter than in Victorian ones, though they’re still checked and scribed where needed.

Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is built in our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Your questions about TV and media units in Coldblow

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Coldblow?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.

Do you make TV and media units for homes in Coldblow?

Yes, Coldblow is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Bexley and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and discuss the design, and then we send a quote.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two options: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. Your quote sets out which you’ve chosen.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Not normally. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. Listed buildings may need listed building consent for works that affect their character.

Where should speakers go in a TV unit?

Speakers work best in open spaces rather than behind doors. A shelf under the TV suits a soundbar with open bays for bigger speakers. Bring the sizes to the design visit.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

Someone needs to let us in. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

Living-room storage in Coldblow

Homes built between 1945 and 1972 make up about 44% of the housing in the area around Coldblow, with about 22% built between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. There are 10 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Coldblow. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. Red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping and loading. If your home is on or just off a main road, it is useful to mention it. We can then plan where the van will stop.

If your home is one of the older houses near Church of St Mary the Virgin, walls that bow and floors that slope are why TV and media units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. The wider area includes historic houses like Hall Place and Gardens, about 0.7 miles north. For a period home anywhere nearby, picture rails and cornices give TV and media units a line to finish at. If you live in a flat close to Bexley station, the route in is measured not just the room, and the sections are sized to fit it.

Coldblow is part of the London Borough of Bexley, about 3 miles west of Sidcup. Anywhere in Coldblow, the process is the same: we visit and measure, send a written quote, make the furniture in our workshop and fit it. What it costs

There’s no set price, because there is no set room. What affects it comes down to:

  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • How big the furniture is
  • Doors and drawers, and how many

Rooms that are not square take more work: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. The quote allows for it, written once we’ve measured up.

Before the design visit

These details help when you contact us:

  • Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • Approximate measurements of the space

To make a start, use our contact form and tell us which room you have in mind and what you want the furniture to do. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and send you a quote in writing afterwards.

Bespoke TV and media units or ready-made?

Standard units come in fixed sizes, so gaps are common. A bespoke unit is scribed to the walls and can run to the ceiling with shelves and cupboards around the screen. Ready-made furniture rarely suits a bay, a box room or a bulkhead over the stairs, and interwar homes often have all three. Built-in pieces are designed to fit them.

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. You’ll see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

What you get with us

  • Saturday visits and fitting by arrangement
  • Finished by spray or by hand
  • Designed for the room you have
  • Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood

Read how bespoke compares with ready-made and what a quote should include.

From workshop to your room

On the morning of the fitting, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. The sections made in our workshop come in next. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. A front path or side gate can make the carry from the van simpler. We measure the path, any steps and the front door as part of the route. Floors, stairs and doorways are protected on the way in.

  1. You send us a note about the room and the unit you’d like.
  2. We visit to measure and go through the design and how the unit should look in the room.
  3. A quote in writing follows, with the finish set out.
  4. The unit is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF, which takes paint well, and birch plywood.
  5. The unit is fitted and scribed to the walls, and any hand painting is done in the room. Go gently with new paintwork while it cures.

How to prepare

  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone

Starting with a design visit

It’s useful to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space, particularly with rough measurements. To share them, use our contact form, and we will arrange a design visit.

When is bespoke worth it?

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

Where other trades come in

Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. That means:

  • Aerial, satellite or broadband installation
  • Structural changes to the wall
  • Painting the walls and ceiling
