About our loft storage in Coldblow
Dormers are a natural place for shelving or a small desk. Their sides are often angled, and their walls rarely straight. We scribe the furniture to follow them. It adds storage without taking up the main floor. We’ll talk through the options in Coldblow. If your home has a loft room with too many jobs and space under the eaves going to waste, eaves cupboards made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish can solve it.
With interwar houses or semis a big part of the picture around Coldblow, loft conversions are common, and they leave low eaves and sloping ceilings. Those spaces, along with bays and hallways, are where fitted storage can add the most. We build storage in lofts that are already converted or boarded.
The furniture is built in our workshop after you’ve had the quote and decided to go ahead. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so you can check every detail beforehand.

When you need someone else
It helps to know what’s outside our work before you plan:
- Altering the structure of the loft
- Approval for structural changes
- Converting the loft itself, which is not our work

How it is made
Plinths and scribe strips
The floor in a loft room is rarely perfectly level. A plinth or adjustable feet let us set the storage level, so everything opens and closes as it should.
Doors and drawer fronts
Fronts are made from moisture-resistant MDF and painted to your colour. Angled fronts are cut to follow the slope, keeping the lines neat.
Could you do it yourself?
A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.
Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job.
Questions from Coldblow
I live near Bexley station. Is that in your area?
Yes. We cover all of Bexley and the rest of London. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with a few details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.
Can you make loft storage for a home in Coldblow?
Yes. Coldblow is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Bexley and London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.
Can you come on a Saturday?
Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Let us know when you first get in touch.
Do I need permission in a conservation area?
Not normally. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. If the building is listed, works affecting its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first.
How long is the fitting for eaves storage?
How long fitting takes depends on how much storage you want in the loft, and your quote sets out the fitting days. The storage is made in our workshop first, so the time in your home is spent fitting. We work tidily and keep the stairs and landing as clear as we can.
Do you do the electrics?
No. We are carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design, and new sockets should be in place before fitting day.
Fitting day, step by step
Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site. How long the fitting takes depends on the length of the eaves and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. It helps to clear the room and the route before we arrive. Fitting day starts with protecting the floors and setting out the pieces. The pieces are levelled, fitted to the walls and fixed back.

Flats, blocks and rented homes
A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, once we have measured the way in.
For flats on red routes or busy main roads, unloading takes some planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so it’s worth raising during the design visit.
