Materials and finishes
Bed mechanism housing
The housing has to be strong and square, so it’s built from sturdy board. It is fixed to a sound wall or floor.
Spray-painted finish
We spray paint in the workshop for a smooth, factory-like finish.
About our wall beds in Coldblow
You need room in front of the cabinet to lower the bed, and that shapes the design. Furniture in front of the bed has to be easy to move or kept out of the way, so the bed can come down without a shuffle. We make wall beds from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a proper bed instead of a sofa bed and a bed that fills a little-used room.
Around Coldblow, interwar houses or semi-detached and detached homes make up a good part of the housing. Many 1930s houses have a small box room over the stairs, often with a raised bulkhead in the floor, and the bulkhead is built around rather than ignored. Main bedrooms from that era are often a good size, with a bay window at the front.
The quote comes in writing, so there’s time to read it properly. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

How fitting works for wall beds
Getting everything level comes first. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Loft stairs in an interwar house can be tight, with a low ceiling at the top, so any section going up there is sized for them. The main stairs in houses of that age are normally straighter. Each section is assembled and fixed in the room.

Close to Braeburn Park? Wall beds are usually planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay. If you live in a period home close to Church of St Mary the Virgin, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where wall beds go. For families living near Maypole Primary School, the inside of wall beds can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow.

FAQs: wall beds in Coldblow
Do you make wall beds for homes in Coldblow?
Yes. We cover all of Bexley and the rest of London, and Coldblow is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, followed by a quote.
Is parking a problem for fitting in Coldblow?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It’s useful to let us know about parking at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.
Will you provide a mattress for the bed?
The mechanism maker sets which mattresses suit the bed, including its size, depth and weight. We can talk you through what the mechanism allows, so the mattress you choose fits.
Can you fit a wall bed to a stud wall?
We check that during the design visit. Solid brick, stud walls and plasterboard all need different fixings, and the mechanism maker sets out what’s required.
What do you do at the measuring visit?
It’s a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, then send a quote in writing.
Can you add sockets inside the units?
No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.
Flat-pack or bespoke?
Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.
Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it is easy to buy.
Pricing wall beds in Coldblow
Several things affect the price:
- How big the furniture is
- Parking near your home
- How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
- The internal fittings
The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We’ll talk through what you need inside during the design visit, then set it out in the quote.
Before the design visit
Here’s what helps us most when you get in touch:
- Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
- The type of home and how the room is reached
- How you want to use the space
- Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
Getting a quote starts with a few details: the room, rough measurements and some pictures if you have them. When you are ready, message us from the contact page. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.
Flats, blocks and rented homes
In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, after checking the walls at the measuring visit.
For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. An agent can arrange access for you, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.
