TV and media units in Hackbridge: what you get
Speakers need space to be heard properly. A soundbar can sit on a shelf below the screen, while larger speakers suit open shelves at the sides. Speakers work best in the open rather than behind closed doors. Typical reasons to get in touch are empty alcoves beside the TV and a TV that looks out of place in the room; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.
A typical 1930s semi has a bay window at the front and a chimney breast with a recess either side. Interwar, semi-detached and detached houses make up a big part of the housing around Hackbridge, so it’s a layout worth planning for. We tend to plan TV and media units along the chimney breast wall so the bay keeps its light.
The furniture is made at our workshop after you have had the quote and decided to go ahead. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so every detail can be checked first.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders
If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so it’s worth raising at the measuring visit.
Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Tell us about them at the design visit.
Boards, parts and paint
Moisture-resistant MDF
Wide panels around a screen need to stay flat. MDF gives a smooth surface for a painted finish.
Birch plywood
A wide shelf under the TV needs stiffness. Birch plywood, sized for the span, keeps it flat.
Built-in living-room furniture in Hackbridge
About 49% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Hackbridge went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 14% between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. The National Heritage List records 5 entries within half a mile of the centre of Hackbridge. Being near listed buildings does not make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. All of London, Merton included, is inside the ULEZ. It applies to the vans that deliver and fit furniture in Hackbridge, as it does anywhere else in London. We plan parking and access with you at the design visit.
For families living near St Thomas of Canterbury Catholic Primary School, TV and media units can be planned with low cupboards for toys and higher shelves for everything else. Near listed buildings like Base of Windmill at Mill House, about 0.5 miles south-east of the centre of Hackbridge, older homes may keep original joinery that TV and media units can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. For a flat near Mitcham Eastfields station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.

Questions we’re often asked
Is parking a problem for fitting in Hackbridge?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.
Can you make TV and media units for a home in Hackbridge?
Yes, we work across Merton, Hackbridge included, and across the rest of London. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit.
How is the furniture painted?
There are two options: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. Your quote sets out which you’ve chosen.
How do you hide the TV cables?
That’s the aim, and it is planned from the start. Access panels make future changes easy. If the TV is wall-mounted, we plan a route behind the screen.
What if I buy a larger TV?
We can plan the opening with a bigger screen in mind, if you expect to upgrade. Mention the largest screen you might buy when we visit.
Does fitted furniture need planning permission?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.
Made for the room, or bought in a box?
An off-the-shelf TV stand is cheaper and quick to buy. It is also easy to replace a stand when your equipment changes, which is a fair point in its favour. Bespoke units are made for one wall and the things you use. Off-the-shelf units come in set widths, so a run along a wall typically ends with a gap, so fitted furniture is made to the wall’s own length. It can also go up to the ceiling rather than stopping short.
Every room is priced on its own, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. You’ll see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder.
Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.
What happens on fitting day
Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, which keeps the lines straight. After that, it is fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that is solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. It is useful to clear the room and the route before we arrive. On the day, we cover the floors first, then bring the sections in. The pieces are levelled, fitted to the walls and fixed back.
- You get in touch about a built-in TV unit.
- At the design visit, we measure the wall and plan the screen space, cable routes and ventilation with you.
- We send a quote in writing with the design, materials and finish, for you to look over.
- We build the unit in our workshop, with routes and ventilation planned in.
- We fit it in your home, scribed to the walls and ready for your equipment. A hand-painted finish is done on site, if you chose one.
How to prepare
- Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
- Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
- Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
