How we make TV and media units for Mitcham

A built-in TV unit gives the screen, the boxes, the speakers and the cables one planned home. Instead of a stand, a tangle of wires and a few odd shelves, the whole wall is designed at once. If you’re planning a TV unit in Mitcham, we start with a design visit to measure and talk through what you use. If you’re living with set-top boxes stacked on a stand and boxes with no ventilation, TV and media units made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish can solve it.

In an area like Mitcham, where interwar homes or semis make up much of the housing, many living rooms have been opened up to the dining room behind. The result is often a long room with a chimney breast, a good spot for TV and media units. Cable routes for a TV or speakers, and space for set-top boxes, are planned at the design visit, with any new sockets left to your electrician.

Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made in our workshop. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so every detail can be checked first.

What we don’t do

We’d rather be clear about where our work stops:

  • Moving sockets or adding new wiring, which is for your electrician
  • Setting up and tuning the TV, boxes and speakers
  • Repairing plaster or redecorating

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can message us from the contact page and we’ll give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

Materials and parts

  • Hand-painted finish
  • Ventilated cabinets
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Cable routes
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Birch plywood

What it costs

Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. This is what makes the difference:

  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • How square the room is

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. A larger piece means more material and more time. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

What we need to know

You do not need exact measurements or a plan. It is enough to send:

  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Rough sizes: width, height and depth
  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters

Getting a quote starts with some details: the room, rough measurements and some photos if you have them. When you’re ready, drop us a line using the contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design, then send a quote in writing.

Fitting day, step by step

You are welcome to ask questions while we work. Most of the decisions were made at the measuring visit and set out in your quote, so the day itself is about careful fitting and leaving the room tidy. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled, scribed to the wall and levelled. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

  1. To begin, fill in our short enquiry form; a brief note on the TV wall and everything that plugs into it is plenty.
  2. At the design visit we measure the wall and plan cable routes and ventilation, as set-top boxes, consoles and amplifiers need air. If you need new sockets, your electrician should do that before fitting.
  3. A written quote follows for the unit.
  4. The unit is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with cable openings and vents cut in.
  5. The unit is fitted and scribed to the walls, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish and the routes left clear.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Tell us about parking near your home
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall

Getting a quote

Every quote follows a design visit. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a quote in writing. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. To arrange a visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Advice

TV and media units for homes in Mitcham

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 49% of the housing in the area around Mitcham, with about 14% built between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Near the centre of Mitcham, Historic England’s list includes Base of Windmill at Mill House (Grade II), about 0.5 miles south-east, and Prospect House (Grade II), about 0.5 miles north-west. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, like fixing into original panelling. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. Parking controls in London are set borough by borough, so Merton has its own. Depending on your street in Mitcham, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a council bay suspension may be needed. Let us know about parking during the design visit.

For an older house near St. Mark's Church, picture rails and cornices give TV and media units a line to finish at. Close to Cranmer Green? TV and media units can be arranged to keep the window and the light clear. If you live in a flat close to Mitcham Eastfields station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.

Common questions about TV and media units

Can you make TV and media units for a home in Mitcham?

Yes, Mitcham is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Merton and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.

I live near Mitcham Eastfields station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Merton and the rest of London. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with some details about the room.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You choose it. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you’ve chosen.

Do I need the building owner’s consent?

Possibly. Leases vary, and some need consent for alterations. We cannot give advice on your lease, so it is worth checking before fitting day.

Where should speakers go in a TV unit?

Speakers and soundbars get open shelves sized for them. Closing speakers behind a door muffles them, so we leave them open.

Can a built-in unit hide all the wires?

That is the aim, and it’s planned from the start. Access panels make future changes easy. For a wall-mounted TV, a route behind the screen is planned in.

Tips worth knowing

A few practical points help before and after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:

  • Plan open spaces for anything controlled by a remote
  • Check where the seating will go
  • Check each box’s guidance on ventilation and clearances
  • Note the size of each box and speaker

Dust collects around equipment and vents, so a quick clean now and then helps. Clear vents keep equipment cooler.

Don’t stack boxes on top of each other in one space because heat builds up between them. Each one needs space around it.

Is bespoke worth it?

Screen sizes change, and a stand chosen for today’s set may not suit the next. We can leave room for a larger screen, so the unit lasts longer. Off-the-shelf units come in set widths, so a run along a wall typically ends with a gap, which fitted furniture avoids. It can use the full height too.

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. We will talk through what you need inside at the design visit, then set it out in the quote.
