About our under-stairs storage in Bandonhill
The space under a staircase is often the hardest-working spot in a house, and the least organised. We design under-stairs storage around the things you actually want to keep there, with pull-out drawers, cupboards or a combination of the two. For a home in Bandonhill, it starts with a design visit to measure the space and talk it through. Most enquiries start with an under-stairs cupboard full of clutter and a low corner too deep to reach into, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.
Homes in an area like Bandonhill can come from many different periods, and so do the tricky corners, from bays and stairs to halls and eaves. Under-stairs cupboards are designed for the space you have. Any meters, fuse boards or boilers stay accessible.
After the design visit, we send you a quote in writing. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish.

Is bespoke worth it?
With ready-made units, the choice of colour is the maker’s. Bespoke storage can be painted in the colour you choose, by spray or by hand, so it can match the hall, the stairs or the woodwork. Ready-made pieces come with a fixed inside layout, which may not suit what you need to store. Fitted furniture is laid out inside around your things.
Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured.

How fitting works for under-stairs storage
Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference, which keeps the lines straight. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. If you live in a block, check any rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours; for a house, steps, paths and parking are the things to mention. Either way, the day is planned during the design visit. Saturdays can be arranged.
- It starts when you get in touch about the space under your stairs. It’s useful to say whether the meters are under there.
- We visit to measure and talk about how you’ll use the space, and check where the meters and fuse board sit.
- Your quote sets out the design, the materials and the finish. Take your time to look through it.
- Your storage is built in our workshop, cut to the angle of your stairs.
- The storage is fitted and set level, ready for the first coats and shoes, with the finish sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.
How to prepare
- Clear the area where the furniture is going
- Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day

Your questions about under-stairs storage in Bandonhill
Is Bandonhill in the area you cover for under-stairs storage?
Yes. We cover all of Sutton and the rest of London, and Bandonhill is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.
Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?
Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
What if my walls and floors are out of level?
Walls and floors that aren’t true are part of the job in older homes. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base.
What if the wall is cold or damp?
It can be done with some care: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. Damp treatment is not something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.
Can the under-stairs storage be painted to match the hall?
Yes. You choose the colour, and we agree it before the work starts. A spray-painted finish is done in our workshop, and a hand-painted one can be done on site. Either finish can follow a colour already in the hall.
Do I need to be in when you fit?
We need someone to let us in. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.
What it is made from
Birch plywood
Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well. It’s a good choice for drawer boxes and carcasses that carry weight. The layered edge can be left on show or painted.
Plinths and scribe strips
Walls are rarely flat and floors rarely level, in older homes particularly. Scribe strips and a plinth take up the difference. That keeps the lines neat all round.

Looking after your furniture
People planning under-stairs storage often ask about these. They’re worth knowing whatever the room:
- Let us know if the hall is being decorated
- Let us know about parking near your home
- Think about what you’ll keep in each drawer
- Measure your vacuum cleaner and ironing board
Wiping the fronts with a soft, damp cloth is normally all they need. Avoid scourers and harsh chemicals, and dry the surface after wiping. Handles and the edges of drawers are touched most, so give them a wipe now and then.
Damp coats and shoes put moisture into a closed space. Let them dry before they go away, and leave the door open for a while after a wet day if the cupboard feels damp.
