Under-stairs storage in Sutton

Planning under-stairs storage for a home in Sutton? It starts with a design visit to measure and talk through ideas, then a quote in writing.

  • A sloping corner nobody can reach
  • A meter or fuse board buried behind clutter
  • Stairs open to a room, with clutter on show

Under-stairs storage in Sutton

When is bespoke worth it?

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

It is worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is typically cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

About our under-stairs storage in Sutton

Under-stairs cupboards often hold a gas meter, an electricity meter or the fuse board. They need to stay accessible, so readings and safety checks can still be made. We plan the storage around them, normally with a door that leaves them in clear reach, so you gain storage without losing access. At the design visit in Sutton, we note what’s there and design around it. If you are living with space under the stairs that’s hard to use and nowhere to keep the vacuum and ironing board, under-stairs cupboards made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish can solve it.

A deep space is only useful if you can reach the back of it, so the design uses drawers, lids or shelves to bring things within reach. Whatever kind of home you have in Sutton, the right answer depends on the depth and the height. Services like meters and boilers stay reachable.

After the design visit, we send you a quote in writing. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so it’s clear what’s included.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

With ready-made units, the choice of colour is the maker’s. Bespoke storage can be painted in the colour you choose, by spray or by hand, so it can sit with the walls, the banisters or the skirting. Few rooms have truly flat walls and level floors, and standalone units show it with gaps and wobbles. Built-in pieces are adjusted to the room as they go in.

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

How fitting day works

With the carcasses fixed and level, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly, and then we check it all again. The time the fitting takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. If you live in a block, check any rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours; for a house, steps, paths and parking are the things to mention. We plan the details of the day during the design visit. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

  1. You contact us about the space under your stairs.
  2. We visit to measure the space at several points along the slope, as stairs and walls are rarely square in older houses.
  3. We send a quote in writing for the storage.
  4. In our workshop we build every part from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, following the slope we measured.
  5. On fitting day the units are set level and scribed to follow the stairs and walls. The finish is sprayed in the workshop or painted by hand once it is in.

Preparing the room

  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through

Ask for a quote

It helps to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space, particularly with rough sizes. To send them over, tell us about the room on our contact form, and we will arrange a design visit.

The problems under-stairs storage solve

The low end of the space is usually the problem. It’s too low to stand in and too deep to reach into. Drawers that slide out on runners turn that tricky corner into useful storage.

Common reasons to get in touch include:

  • Open space under the stairs that collects clutter
  • A fuse board that’s hard to get to
  • Wanting a quiet corner for paperwork
  • A vacuum cleaner that has nowhere to go

Close to Manor Park? Under-stairs cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Whether the route into your home has been checked
  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • Will the doors close with even gaps?

What affects the cost of under-stairs storage

There is no set price, because there is no set room. What affects it comes down to:

  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • How big the furniture is
  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size is the starting point. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

What to send when you get in touch

Getting a few details early makes the visit more useful. If you can, send:

  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • Your postcode and the borough

Getting a quote starts with some details: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of pictures if you can take them. To send them, get in touch through our contact form. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.

FAQs: under-stairs storage in Sutton

My home in Sutton is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. Under-stairs cupboards are built in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It’s useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Sutton (London) station?

Yes. We cover the whole of London. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with some details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

How long will you be in my home?

It depends on how much storage you want under the stairs, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We’ll talk about it at the design visit.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, by arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you get in touch.

Do you do the electrics?

No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and furniture inside a house does not normally need it. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.

Under-stairs storage in Sutton: local notes

In the area around Sutton, the largest groups of homes date from between 1973 and 1999 (about 25%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 22%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. There are 16 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Sutton. Being near listed buildings doesn’t make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. About 51% of households in the neighbourhood around Sutton live in purpose-built flats, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.

The wider area includes historic houses such as Nonsuch Mansion, about 1.6 miles west. If your own home is a period one, pull-out drawers can reach right to the back of a deep under-stairs space. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Church of St Nicholas, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.
