Flats, conversions and lettings

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We cannot give advice on leases, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

Under-stairs storage in The Wrythe: what you get

No two staircases are quite the same. The underside slopes, the side of the stairs runs at its own angle and the floor below is rarely perfectly level. Each under-stairs cupboard we make follows those lines, so the fronts sit neatly against the stairs. That’s something a standard unit can’t do, in The Wrythe or anywhere else. We make under-stairs cupboards from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are nowhere to keep the vacuum and ironing board and nowhere to put coats, shoes and bags.

In an area where interwar homes or semis make up much of the housing, as around The Wrythe, loft conversions are common, and they leave low eaves and sloping ceilings. Fitted storage can make use of the eaves, the bay or the hall. For lofts, we work in spaces that are already converted or boarded.

Where other trades are needed, for example an electrician to move a socket, we point that out. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Why bespoke in The Wrythe?

Period walls are rarely flat, and floors are often out of level. Standard units show the gaps, and filler strips can only hide so much. Our storage is scribed to the walls and stairs and set level, so the lines look right. Off-the-shelf furniture comes in a few set depths, which may be too deep for one spot and too shallow for another. With fitted furniture, the depth is chosen for the room.

Tricky rooms take more time: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. That is reflected in the quote, which we write after seeing the room.

Why us?

  • We work across all London boroughs
  • Spray painted or hand painted, in the colour you choose
  • Saturday work by arrangement
  • Built in our workshop and fitted in your home

Fitted storage in The Wrythe

About 40% of the homes in the neighbourhood around The Wrythe went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 21% between 1973 and 1999, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how under-stairs cupboards are fixed and fitted. The National Heritage List records 19 entries within half a mile of the centre of The Wrythe. Being near listed buildings doesn’t make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. On TfL’s red routes, the rules on stopping and loading are strict. If your home is on or just off a main road, it’s useful to mention it. We will plan where the van can stop.

Close to Carshalton Park? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and under-stairs cupboards can give those things a place. Nonsuch Mansion, about 2.9 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, the cupboard door under a period staircase can be kept or replaced to match the new storage.

Elsewhere in Sutton, we also cover North Cheam (2 miles west), Sutton Common (2 miles north-west), Bandonhill (2 miles south-east), Shanklin Village (2 miles south-west), Roundshaw (2 miles south-east) and Cheam (3 miles south-west). The Wrythe is one of the larger places we cover in Sutton.

Why people ask for under-stairs storage in The Wrythe

Many people get in touch after digging through clutter to reach a meter or the fuse board. Good storage can keep these in clear reach behind their own door, while the rest of the space is put to proper use.

A few of the things people ask us to solve are these:

  • A staircase with untidy space beneath it
  • Space under the stairs that’s hard to use
  • Coats and shoes piling up in the hall
  • Needing a compact spot for a laptop

Near listed buildings like Bedford Cottage Woodcote House, less than half a mile south-west of the centre of The Wrythe, older homes may keep original joinery that under-stairs cupboards can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

Choosing a carpenter

  • How they handle walls that are not straight
  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
  • How the doors are hung and adjusted

Questions we are often asked

Is parking a problem for fitting in The Wrythe?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Can you make under-stairs storage for a home in The Wrythe?

Yes. We cover all of Sutton and the rest of London, and The Wrythe is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by arrangement. Just mention it when you get in touch.

Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?

Walls and floors that are not true are part of the job in older homes. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base, so there are no gaps at the sides.

What happens when you come to measure?

It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, then send a quote in writing.

Which materials go into your under-stairs cupboards?

Our storage is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then painted. Drawer boxes are birch plywood, as it’s strong and holds screws firmly. Your quote confirms the materials and finish.

Fitting day, step by step

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference. After that, it’s fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that is solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Semis and detached houses often have a front path or a side gate, which can make carrying in easier. We measure the path, any steps and the front door as part of the route. Floors, stairs and doorways are protected on the way in, and the sections are assembled in place.

  1. First we hear what’s under your stairs now and what you need, like coats, shoes or the vacuum cleaner.
  2. We measure the space, the slope and the floor, and note any meters or fuse boards, because they must stay accessible.
  3. We talk through drawers, cupboards and coat storage, and send a written quote, with the finish set out.
  4. Every part is made at our workshop, ready for a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
  5. The storage is fitted, scribed to the stairs and checked with you. The way to any meters is left clear.

Honest limits

We’d rather be clear about where our work stops:

  • Painting the hallway walls and ceiling
  • New sockets, lights or wiring, which are for your electrician
  • Reshaping or rebuilding the staircase

If in doubt, you can fill in our short enquiry form and describe the room. How a job runs, step by step.
