Under-Stairs Storage in North Cheam

In North Cheam, we design under-stairs storage around the room you actually have. Your under-stairs cupboard is designed at a visit to your home and built in our workshop.

  • An under-stairs cupboard full of clutter
  • A hallway crowded with coats and shoes
  • A meter or fuse board buried behind clutter

Under-stairs storage designed for your room

About our under-stairs storage in North Cheam

Where the space under the stairs opens onto a room, a compact desk can fit beneath it. A built-in desk with shelving and drawers can turn the space into a quiet corner for paperwork. Any new socket or light there is for your electrician, and we leave room and a route for the cable. It is worth talking through during the design visit in North Cheam. If you are living with a meter or fuse board buried behind clutter and a dark, wasted space under the stairs, that is what under-stairs cupboards are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Around North Cheam, interwar houses or semi-detached and detached homes make up a good part of the housing. In a typical 1930s house, storage tends to hide in the bay, under the stairs and in the box room. Any meters or fuse boards that need to stay reachable are designed around.

Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made at our workshop. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so you can check every detail beforehand.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths.

Pricing under-stairs storage in North Cheam

What it costs comes down to the materials and the time involved. The main factors are:

  • Parking near your home
  • Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • How big the furniture is
  • Spray painting or hand painting

The finish affects the cost: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

Before the design visit

Here’s what helps us most when you get in touch:

  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on

You don’t need exact measurements to get started. Everything is measured properly when we visit. To arrange it, fill in our short enquiry form and let us know about the room. The written quote follows the visit.

Making use of tricky spaces in North Cheam

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 58% of the housing in the neighbourhood around North Cheam, with about 13% built between 1973 and 1999, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. That matters for under-stairs cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. North Cheam is partly covered by a conservation area, according to Historic England’s records. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. Detached and semi-detached houses are home to about 43% of households in the area around North Cheam, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. In a semi or detached house, a driveway, where there is one, can make unloading easier.

If your children go to Cheam Park Farm Primary Academy or a school nearby, under-stairs cupboards can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit. If your home is one of the older houses near St Oswald Church, under-stairs cupboards are scribed to walls and stair strings that are rarely straight. If you live near Nonsuch Park, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and under-stairs cupboards can give those things a place.

Bespoke under-stairs storage or ready-made?

Off-the-shelf storage is not designed around a meter or a fuse board. Put in the wrong place, it can block the access meter readers and engineers need. A design made for the space keeps them in clear reach from the start. Off-the-shelf units come in set widths, so a run along a wall usually ends with a gap, which fitted furniture avoids. It can also go up to the ceiling rather than stopping short.

Access to the room makes a difference too. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, and that is part of the price. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit.

Flats, leases and landlords

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, as it makes good use of an awkward room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants. An agent can arrange access for you.

What happens on fitting day

When we arrive on fitting day, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. The sections made in our workshop come in next, one at a time. How long the fitting takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Clearing the room and the way in beforehand helps the day run well. On the day, we cover the floors first, then bring the sections in. Each piece is levelled, scribed where the wall wanders and fixed to suit the wall.

  1. You contact us about the space under your stairs.
  2. We visit to measure the space at several points along the slope, as stairs and walls are rarely square in older houses.
  3. We send a quote in writing for the storage.
  4. In our workshop we build every part from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, following the slope we measured.
  5. On fitting day the units are set level and scribed to follow the stairs and walls. The finish is sprayed in the workshop or painted by hand once it is in.

How to prepare

  • Empty the space we’ll be working in
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street

Common questions about under-stairs storage

Do you cover homes near West Sutton station?

Yes, homes across Sutton and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Do you make under-stairs storage for homes in North Cheam?

Yes, North Cheam is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Sutton and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Usually not. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. Listed buildings can need listed building consent for works that affect their character, so check with the council first.

Could the space under my stairs take a desk?

That depends on the shape of your stairs and the room beside them. At the design visit we will say whether a desk makes sense there. Where it works, it makes a neat spot for a laptop and paperwork.

How is under-stairs storage priced?

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. It depends on the size of the space, how many drawers and doors you want, and the finish. For a quote, message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.

How long will the fitting take?

How long the fitting takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Because everything is made in our workshop, the work in your home is the fitting itself. We know the hall is a busy route, so we keep it as clear as possible.
