Under-stairs storage in Colindale: what you get

No two staircases are quite the same. The soffit slopes, the stringer sets its own line, and floors are often a little out of level. Each under-stairs cupboard we make follows those lines, so the fronts sit neatly against the stairs. It is the part of the job a boxed unit simply cannot manage. People typically come to us about coats and shoes piling up in the hall and a vacuum cleaner that has nowhere to go, and the answer is made at our workshop from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Many homes around Colindale have been built since 2000, and newer homes rarely come with much storage. Halls, landings and the space beneath the stairs are where fitted storage can help. Plasterboard stud walls are common, so fixings go into the studs or use fixings made for the board.

The furniture is made in our workshop after you’ve had the quote and decided to go ahead. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so every detail can be checked first.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

With ready-made units, the choice of colour is the maker’s. Ours is spray-painted or hand-painted in a colour agreed with you, so it can sit with the walls, the banisters or the skirting. Large off-the-shelf pieces can make a small room feel smaller, whereas fitted pieces painted to suit the walls sit back into the space.

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. You’ll see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

Flats, leases and landlords

A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, once we have measured the way in.

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. We choose fixings to suit the wall, which we check during the design visit.

Your questions about under-stairs storage in Colindale

Can you make under-stairs storage for a home in Colindale?

Yes. Colindale is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Barnet and London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Colindale?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It’s useful to let us know about parking during the design visit.

Is it possible to fit storage around a meter under the stairs?

Yes. Meters and fuse boards often sit under the stairs, and they need to stay accessible. At the design visit we measure around them and leave a clear way in. We do not move meters, so the storage works around their current position.

How is under-stairs storage priced?

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. The mix of drawers, doors and shelves, and the finish you choose, all play a part. We set it all out in a written quote.

How long will the fitting take?

The time the fitting takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Drawers, doors and carcasses are all made in the workshop before we arrive. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

Can you fit a small desk under the stairs?

That depends on the shape of your stairs and the room beside them. We look at it at the design visit and tell you honestly whether it will work. If it does, a compact desk with shelving can suit paperwork and a laptop.

Materials and finishes

Plinths and scribe strips

In older houses, walls and floors are seldom straight. We use scribe strips at the walls and a plinth at the floor to take up the difference. The result is neat, even lines all round.

Moisture-resistant MDF

Hallways see wet coats, shoes and umbrellas, so a moisture-resistant grade makes sense. It gives the painted fronts a smooth base, and it holds its shape in the space under the stairs.

Making use of tricky spaces in Colindale

Homes built since 2000 make up about 50% of the housing in the streets around Colindale, with about 24% built between 1919 and 1939, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. The National Heritage List records 8 entries within half a mile of the centre of Colindale. Being near listed buildings doesn’t make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. Red routes are run by TfL, with tight limits on where and when vehicles can stop. Where a home in Colindale is on or beside a main road, it helps to mention that during the design visit. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day.

Living in a block of flats near Hendon station? Then under-stairs cupboards are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. If your home is one of the older houses near St Matthias the Apostle church, pull-out drawers can reach right to the back of a deep under-stairs space. If you live near Sunny Hill Park, under-stairs cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things.

Could you do it yourself?

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.

Fitting day, step by step

Every fitting follows the same order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the space and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Newer homes often have stud walls, so on fitting day heavy pieces go into the studs or stand on the floor. Floors are covered while we work.

  1. You get in touch and let us know what’s under the stairs now, including any gas meter, electricity meter or fuse board.
  2. We visit to measure the slope and the floor, and agree a design that keeps any meter or fuse board accessible.
  3. A quote in writing follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. We make it in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a door or panel left where the meters need access.
  5. The storage is fitted and set level, and the meter access is checked with you.

Preparing the room

  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street

How to get a quote

It helps to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space, along with rough measurements. To send them over, get in touch through our contact form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.
