How we make under-stairs storage for West Hendon

When the hall is tight, the space under the stairs is often the only place left for coats, shoes and bags. A hanging section, shoe drawers and a shelf for keys keep everything off the floor. With a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, it sits quietly in the hall. It’s a small change that makes a busy hallway feel ordered. If you are living with a vacuum cleaner that has nowhere to go and space under the stairs that’s hard to use, under-stairs cupboards made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish can solve it.

Many homes around West Hendon were built since 2000, and in a newer house with a converted loft, the eaves and slopes are worth using. We build storage in lofts that are already converted or boarded. Elsewhere, fitted storage is fixed to plasterboard walls with fixings that suit it.

We write quotes in plain English. You will see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s typically a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

A standard unit knows nothing about your meter or fuse board. Put in the wrong place, it can block the access meter readers and engineers need. A design made for the space keeps them in clear reach from the start. Large off-the-shelf pieces can make a small room feel smaller, while fitted furniture, painted in a colour that suits the walls, reads as part of the room.

We don’t publish set prices, because every piece is designed for one room. Instead, we measure, talk through the design and then quote in writing, with the materials and finish set out. To start, message us from the contact page.

How fitting day works

On the morning of the fitting, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. Next, we carry in the sections made in our workshop. How long fitting takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Before fixing into a stud wall, we check for pipes and cables, with heavier pieces tied into the studs. Any new sockets or plumbing are for your electrician or plumber, ideally before fitting day.

  1. It starts when you get in touch about the space under your stairs. It’s useful to say whether the meters are under there.
  2. We visit to measure and talk about how you will use the space, and check where the meters and fuse board sit.
  3. A quote in writing follows, with the fitting days agreed. Take your time to look through it.
  4. Your storage is built in our workshop, cut to the angle of your stairs. The materials are moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The storage is fitted and set level, ready for the first coats and shoes.

Advice

Fitted storage in West Hendon

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around West Hendon were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 38%) and since 2000 (about 35%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. There is a conservation area within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of West Hendon, going by Historic England’s data. The controls in a conservation area are mostly about the outside of buildings, so furniture fitted inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Your council can advise if you’re unsure. Around a third of the homes in the area around West Hendon (about 35%) were built since 2000, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Newer homes often have little built-in storage, and their walls are typically plasterboard on studs, so the fixings for under-stairs cupboards are chosen for the board.

Do you need under-stairs storage in West Hendon?

In a smaller home, every bit of space counts. Turned into proper storage, it can hold the everyday things that would otherwise fill the hallway. It also takes pressure off the other cupboards in the house.

Here are some of the needs we’re asked about most:

  • Nowhere to put coats, shoes and bags
  • A meter or fuse board buried behind clutter
  • Needing a compact spot for a laptop
  • An under-stairs cupboard full of clutter

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Church of the Holy Innocents, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent.

What to check before you book

  • How the furniture will be finished, and where
  • Will the doors close with even gaps?
  • How they handle walls that are not straight
  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?

Questions from West Hendon

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in West Hendon?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the measuring visit.

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Are drawers or cupboards better under the stairs?

It depends on the shape of the space and what you want to store. Drawers make the low end useful, because you pull the back of the space to you. Cupboards suit the tall end, for coats or a vacuum cleaner.

How much does under-stairs storage cost?

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Drawers usually involve more work than plain shelving, and the finish makes a difference too. Everything is set out in a written quote after the visit.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps to avoid condensation. If there is damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

Can you fit a small desk under the stairs?

It depends on the height and how open the space is. At the design visit we’ll say whether a desk makes sense there. If it does, a compact desk with shelving can suit paperwork and a laptop.
