The problems under-stairs storage solve

After a hallway is redecorated, an old, tired cupboard under the stairs can stand out. New storage, painted in a colour chosen for the hall, can tie it together. If decorating is planned, it’s worth mentioning at the measuring visit so the work can be timed sensibly.

Most of the enquiries we get are about things like these:

  • Open space under the stairs that collects clutter
  • A hallway crowded with coats and shoes
  • Wanting a quiet corner for paperwork
  • Space under the stairs that’s hard to use

If you live in a period home close to St Paul's, pull-out drawers can reach right to the back of a deep under-stairs space.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Will the quote be in writing?
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?
  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

Under-stairs storage in Crystal Palace

Under-stairs storage isn’t only for houses. Maisonettes, split-level flats and homes with stairs down to a lower floor often have usable space beneath the steps. The parts we make in our workshop are sized to get through the doors and hallways on the way in. The same careful process applies to any home in Crystal Palace. If your home has struggling to reach the gas or electricity meter and cleaning things with no proper home, under-stairs cupboards made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish can solve it.

In a part of London with mixed housing, like much of the city, no two homes have quite the same walls and floors. Under-stairs cupboards are scribed and levelled on site, so they look straight even where the room is not. You choose the paint colour, and whether it is spray-painted or hand-painted.

The furniture is built in our workshop after you’ve had the quote and decided to go ahead. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Questions we’re often asked

I live near Crystal Palace station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Bromley and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit.

My home in Crystal Palace is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Normally not. Inside a house, fitted furniture doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings can require listed building consent for works that affect their character, so ask the council’s conservation officer.

How long will you be in my home?

It depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. The design visit gives us what we need to plan it.

Can I send photos before the visit?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit. Show anything the furniture has to work around, like radiators or sockets.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. After that, you don’t need to stay in the room, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.

Boards, parts and paint

Plinths and scribe strips

Scribe strips are trimmed to follow the wall, closing the gap a standard unit would leave. They help the storage look as though it was always there. The plinth at the bottom does the same job at the floor.

Birch plywood

The drawers under a staircase can carry a real load. Birch plywood suits them, as it is strong and holds screws well. Long shelves benefit from it too.

Bespoke under-stairs storage or ready-made?

Ready-made units are designed for shipping and quick assembly. Bespoke storage is designed for one space and built to suit it, using birch plywood for strong drawer boxes and moisture-resistant MDF for painted fronts. Which suits you depends on how much you want from the space. Ready-made pieces come with a fixed inside layout, which may not suit what you need to store. Fitted furniture is laid out inside around your things.

There’s no price list, because every piece is designed for one room. Instead, we measure, talk through the design and then quote in writing, with the materials and finish set out. To start, drop us a line using the contact form.

What you get with us

  • Built around your room
  • Over 300 projects completed
  • Edges scribed to follow your walls

Under-stairs storage in Crystal Palace: local notes

In the streets around Crystal Palace, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 36%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 25%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Part of Crystal Palace is in the Crystal Palace Park Conservation Area, one of the conservation areas recorded by Historic England. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission in a conservation area, as the controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings. The council can confirm if you are not sure. The ULEZ, run by TfL, takes in all of London, so Bromley is inside it. It applies to every van that comes to fit furniture in Crystal Palace. Parking and access are planned at the design visit.

Kingswood House, about 0.9 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, the triangle under an old staircase is often deeper than it looks. Living in a block of flats near Crystal Palace station? Then the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.

Looking after your furniture

Getting the most from under-stairs storage starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:

  • Tell us about parking at the design visit
  • Note the things that need a home under the stairs
  • Mention any decorating plans so the work can be timed well
  • Empty the cupboard so we can measure every corner

When you load the drawers, put the heaviest things low and towards the front. It helps the runners and keeps the storage working well. Shelves are made for the things you told us about during the design visit, so it’s worth keeping to that plan.

Keep the doors and drawers closed when the space is not in use. Overfilled drawers put strain on the runners, so it pays to sort them now and then. Deal with any wet shoes or umbrellas before they mark the base.

What happens on fitting day

You’re welcome to ask questions while we work. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving everything tidy. How long fitting takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Clearing the room and the way in beforehand makes the day easier, including pictures on nearby walls. Floors and doorways are protected before anything comes in. Then the sections come in and are joined in place.

  1. You get in touch with some details and, if you like, a sketch. It helps to say whether the meters are under there.
  2. We visit to measure and talk about how you’ll use the space.
  3. Your quote sets out the design, the materials and the finish.
  4. Your storage is built in our workshop, cut to the angle of your stairs.
  5. The storage is fitted and set level, ready for the first coats and shoes, with the finish sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.

Before fitting day

  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know

Ask for a quote

We quote once we’ve seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and talk through the design with you, then send a written quote. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, get in touch through our contact form.
