How we make fitted wardrobes for SE26

The inside matters as much as the doors. We plan the mix of long hanging, double hanging, shelves and drawers around your clothes, so nothing is squashed and no height is wasted. It’s worth noting the clothes you reach for most before the design visit. We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about bedroom alcoves that could hold clothes and too little room for clothes.

You are welcome to ask questions while we work. Most of the decisions were made at the design visit and set out in your quote, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully. How long the fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and the fitting days are set out in your quote.

  1. You send us some details about the room and the storage you need.
  2. At the design visit, we measure up and plan the doors and the inside with you. We also look at the way in, in case the sections need to go up narrow stairs.
  3. We send a quote in writing for the wardrobes, so you can see what’s included.
  4. We make the carcasses, doors and drawers in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The wardrobes are fitted in your home, set level and scribed to the walls and ceiling.

What affects the price in SE26

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size is the starting point. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

Why work with us

  • Saturdays by arrangement
  • A design visit, then a written quote
  • Every London borough and the City of London covered
  • Built from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood

Starting with a design visit

To get a quote, tell us about the room on our contact form and tell us a little about the room and what you want the furniture to do. We then arrange a design visit to measure and talk through the design, and a written quote follows.

What’s near Sydenham

Our area takes in the homes around Church of St Bartholomew, Fox & Hounds pub and Mayow Park and the streets around them. Nearby too are St Bartholomews's Church of England Primary School (within half a mile north), Kirkdale School (close by, under half a mile north-west) and Sydenham High School (less than half a mile west). There is a railway station in Sydenham itself: Sydenham station. Nearby you’ll also find Crystal Palace Museum (1 mile west) and St Christopher's Hospice (under half a mile south-west). Green spaces nearby include Dacres Wood.

Bedroom storage across SE26

Across SE26, from Beckenham, Penge and Anerley outwards, we design and fit fitted wardrobes. On an external wall, ventilation is designed in to help keep condensation away. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whatever it is made of.

About 34% of the homes in the SE26 postcode district went up before 1919, and about 21% between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Purpose-built flats are home to about 40% of households in the SE26 postcode district, based on Census 2021. For a flat, fitted wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day. 2 of the 11 places in SE26 with their own pages here have their centre inside a conservation area, according to Historic England’s data. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission.

The ULEZ has covered every London borough since August 2023, and red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping.

Sydenham: Living in a block of flats near Sydenham station? Then the route in is measured along with the room itself, and the sections are sized to fit it. For an older house near Church of St Bartholomew, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design.

Practical tips

Most of what helps is simple. Here’s what we suggest:

  • List the things that will not hang, such as jumpers and shoes
  • Work out the split between long and short hanging
  • Have sockets moved before the wardrobes go in
  • Look at whether your lease needs consent for alterations

Hang clothes evenly along each rail. Heavy coats are best on a short rail or near a support, so the rail stays straight.

Do not dry washing inside a wardrobe or in the bedroom with the doors shut. A little ventilation in the room helps.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Standard wardrobes cannot follow a slope. A fitted wardrobe can be shaped to the ceiling line.

What to check before you book

  • Real projects you can actually look at
  • Whether you will get a written quote, not just a figure
  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote
  • How the doors are hung and adjusted

Flat-pack or bespoke?

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.

Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: flat-pack is typically cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

Materials and finishes

Spray-painted finish

Spraying in the workshop means the doors come to your home finished. Give the paint time to cure fully.

Birch plywood

Shelves inside a wardrobe carry folded clothes, shoes and boxes. Birch plywood keeps them flat.

Flats, conversions and lettings

In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so each section is sized to get through without a struggle.

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind.

FAQs: fitted wardrobes in SE26

Can I choose the layout inside the wardrobe?

You choose the mix of hanging, shelves and drawers. It can include long and double hanging, shelves, drawers and space for shoes. We talk it through at the design visit.

How is the price worked out?

It depends on the size, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish. We send a written quote after the design visit.

Do you make the furniture yourselves?

Each piece is made in our workshop for the room it’s going into, then brought to your home and fitted. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.

Do you do the electrics?

No. We’re carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design, and new sockets should be in place before fitting day.

How long will the fitting take?

The time on site depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We will talk you through what to expect beforehand.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, by arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you get in touch.

How do I get started?

It is easiest to drop us a line using the contact form and let us know about the room. We then arrange a design visit, measure up and send a written quote.
