Under-stairs storage in Upper Norwood
Under-stairs storage in Upper Norwood: what you get
The space under a staircase is often the hardest-working spot in a house, and the least organised. Our under-stairs storage is planned around what you need to store, with pull-out drawers, cupboards or a combination of the two. In Upper Norwood, as everywhere we work, it begins with a visit to measure and plan. We make under-stairs cupboards from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the things people most often want solved are a low corner too deep to reach into and space under the stairs that’s hard to use.
Older rooms often suit panelled doors, newer rooms plainer ones. For a home in Upper Norwood, door styles are talked through at the measuring visit. You choose the colour, spray-painted in the workshop or hand-painted on site.
A quote in writing follows the design visit. It sets out the design we’ve talked through, the materials and the finish, so it’s clear what’s included.

Flats, conversions and lettings
For flats on red routes or busy main roads, unloading takes some planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so it is worth raising at the design visit.
If the property is let, we’ll need access agreed with the tenants. An agent can arrange access for you, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.
Before and after fitting day
Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after with a little care. A few things help it stay looking good:
- Measure your vacuum cleaner and ironing board
- Bring paint colours you like to the design visit
- Look for meters, a fuse board or pipes before we visit
- Make a list of what you want to store before the design visit
When we have finished fitting, the drawers and doors are ready to use. Paint needs time to cure fully, so treat the new finish gently at first. Keep tape, sharp knocks and strong cleaners away from it while it settles.
Check now and then that handles and hinges are tight. Tightening a screw early stops a small looseness becoming a problem. If a door drops or a drawer starts to catch, use our contact form and let us know what’s happening.

Fitting day, step by step
Once the main sections are fixed in place, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly, then checked again. How long the fitting takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. On fitting day, each piece is fitted to the room’s own walls, with scribing where they wander and packing where floors dip. Hand painting can happen on site, while spray-painted pieces come ready from the workshop.
- First you tell us about the stairs and what you’d like to store beneath them.
- At the design visit we measure under the stairs and plan the drawers and doors with you, keeping the meters and fuse board easy to reach.
- A quote in writing follows, with the design, finish and fitting days set out, for you to read through.
- The drawers, doors and carcasses are made at our workshop.
- We bring it to your home, fit it and leave it ready to use.
Before we arrive
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
- Tell us about parking near your home

Advice
Upper Norwood homes and under-stairs storage
About 35% of the homes in the area around Upper Norwood went up before 1919, and about 25% between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. 11 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of central Upper Norwood. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. A quarter or more of the homes in the area around Upper Norwood (about 25%) were built between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Homes from that era tend to have little built-in storage, so under-stairs cupboards make a real difference, fixed to suit concrete, block or brick.
If you live in a flat close to Gipsy Hill station, the route in is measured along with the room itself, and the sections are sized to fit it. The wider area includes historic houses such as Kingswood House, about 0.8 miles north. For a period home anywhere nearby, the space under the stairs may hold the meters or the fuse board, and the cupboards are planned around them. If you live near Long Meadow, under-stairs cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things.
Upper Norwood is part of the London Borough of Croydon, about 2 miles south-west of Thornton Heath. We cover Upper Norwood as part of our work across Croydon, and the process is the same everywhere we work. Our Croydon coverage includes Upper Norwood, along with the rest of the borough.

How we price under-stairs storage
What you pay depends on:
- Doors and drawers, and how many
- Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
- The internal fittings
- How big the furniture is
Tricky rooms take more time: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. The quote allows for it.
What we need to know
Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:
- Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
- Any ideas or images you have saved
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
- Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, when we’ve measured up and talked through the design. For a quote, tell us about the room on our contact form.
Flat-pack or bespoke?
What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.
A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.
Questions from Upper Norwood
My home in Upper Norwood is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?
At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
Is Upper Norwood in the area you cover for under-stairs storage?
Yes, we work across Croydon, Upper Norwood included, and across the rest of London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.
Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?
There are two ways to finish it: spray painted or hand painted. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.
My walls aren’t straight. Is that a problem?
Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. We scribe the edges to follow the wall and set the furniture level on adjustable feet or a plinth.
Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?
Not normally. Inside a house, fitted furniture doesn’t normally need planning permission. If the building is listed, works affecting its character can require listed building consent.
What happens at the measuring visit?
We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and a written quote follows.
