Your questions about built-in bookshelves in Crystal Palace

My home in Crystal Palace is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. Built-in bookshelves are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Do you cover homes near Crystal Palace station?

Yes. We cover all of Bromley and the rest of London. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit.

What happens during the design visit?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, then send a quote in writing.

Can I send pictures before the visit?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

It needs a little planning: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. We do not treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

What depth do built-in bookshelves need?

That depends on your books. Paperbacks suit shallow shelves, while large books and records need deeper ones, so many people mix depths. We plan depths around your collection at the design visit.

A shelf’s strength depends on its span, its depth and its load. Long spans carrying books need a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support, or we divide the run with uprights. We often use birch plywood, which is stiff and strong under heavy books. If your home has bare walls that could hold shelving and bookcases that lean or wobble, that’s what built-in bookshelves are for, made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

Where housing types are mixed, as they are in much of London, living rooms vary a lot in shape. You might have alcoves, a bay, a wide open-plan room or a compact one. The design for your home in Crystal Palace starts from its own walls, and long shelves are sized not to sag.

A quote in writing is the clearest record of what we’ve agreed. It sets out the built-in bookcase designed for your room, its materials and its finish.

Crystal Palace homes and built-in bookshelves

About 36% of the homes in the streets around Crystal Palace went up before 1919, and about 25% between 1973 and 1999, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Within a mile of the centre of Crystal Palace, 13 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are largely about how buildings look from outside. Flats in converted or shared houses account for about 24% of households in the streets around Crystal Palace, the 2021 Census shows. In a converted house, rooms can be odd shapes, with new partitions meeting old walls, and the route in may go through a shared hall and stairs. If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before anything is fixed to the walls.

If your children go to Crystal Palace School or a school nearby, shelving with deep cupboards below keeps books, games and school things in one place. The wider area includes historic houses such as Kingswood House, about 0.9 miles north-west. For a period home anywhere nearby, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for built-in bookshelves. If you live near Crystal Palace Park, a room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone.

Crystal Palace is part of the London Borough of Bromley, about 8 miles east of Orpington. We work across all London boroughs and the City of London, and Crystal Palace is part of that. Crystal Palace is one of the places in Bromley where we make built-in bookshelves.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

A row of standard bookcases rarely fills a wall, and on a wall that isn’t straight the gaps show. Ours are scribed to the walls and can run up to the ceiling. Walls and floors are seldom perfectly flat in any home, and standalone units show it with gaps and wobbles. Built-in pieces are adjusted to the room as they go in.

Rooms that aren’t square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. That is reflected in the quote, which we write after seeing the room.

Before and after fitting day

New paint needs time to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. After that, a few simple habits help:

  • Note the sizes of your largest books and records
  • Count roughly how many shelves your books fill now
  • Consider deeper cupboards at the bottom
  • Tell us if a radiator sits where you’d like shelves

On an outside wall, don’t pack books tight against the back. Watch for any musty smell or marks.

Keep heavy things on low shelves and use a step rather than the shelves to reach up.

How fitting day works

With the carcasses fixed and level, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly, and then we check it all again. How long fitting takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and your quote sets out the fitting days. On fitting day, each piece is fitted to the room’s own walls, scribed where walls bow and levelled where floors slope. Hand painting can happen on site, while spray-painted pieces come ready from the workshop.

  1. You get in touch with a few details about where the bookshelves will go.
  2. We visit to measure the wall, the openings and the skirting, cornice and picture rail the shelves must meet.
  3. We then send a quote in writing for the bookshelves.
  4. We build the shelving in sections in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day each section is set level and scribed to walls that are rarely straight, so there are no gaps along the sides.
  6. The finish is either sprayed in our workshop or hand-painted once the shelves are in place.

Before fitting day

  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Empty the space we will be working in

Getting a quote

A quote begins with some details from you: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of pictures if you can take them. When you’re ready, drop us a line using the contact form. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.

Advice

What affects the cost of built-in bookshelves

We quote each job after the design visit, because no two rooms are the same. This is what makes the difference:

  • The width and height of the space
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • The internal fittings
  • Parking near your home

How it is painted is part of the price: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

Before the design visit

There is no need for exact sizes or plans. Just send what you can:

  • Examples of the look you are after
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you don’t, that’s fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Materials and finishes

Shelves

Long spans need a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support so it stays straight under books. Shorter bays are another answer.

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting can be done in your home after fitting. Small marks on it are simple to touch up.
