Loft storage for homes in Crystal Palace
Our work is in loft rooms that are already converted, or lofts that are boarded. The conversion itself isn’t our work, and conversions come under Building Regulations. With the room in place, we can plan the storage. In Crystal Palace, it all begins with a design visit. We make eaves cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about a loft room that still feels unfinished and furniture that can’t get up to the loft.
Homes in an area like Crystal Palace can come from many different periods, so the awkward spaces vary too: a bay, the space under the stairs, a hallway recess or the eaves of a converted loft. Eaves cupboards are designed for the space you have. Meters, fuse boards and boilers keep the access they need.
After the design visit, we send you a written quote. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so it is clear what’s included.

Is bespoke worth it?
For simple storage in a boarded loft, ready-made shelving can do the job. Bespoke work makes sense in a converted loft room, where the storage is part of the room. We will give you an honest view at the design visit. Gaps behind, beside and above ready-made furniture collect dust, while fitted pieces are scribed tight to the walls and ceiling.
Rooms that are not square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. That is reflected in the quote, which we write after seeing the room.

Materials and finishes
Spray-painted finish
Spray painting suits angled panels and plain fronts alike. We do it in our workshop, where the finish can be kept even. Any paint colour agreed with you can be used.
Birch plywood
Drawers in the knee wall can carry heavy things, from boxes to bedding. Birch plywood suits them, as it is strong and holds screws well. It works well for longer shelves too.
What happens on fitting day
Once the main sections are fixed in place, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly. The time the fitting takes depends on the length of the eaves and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. For a flat, building rules and lift booking are worth checking early; if you live in a house, let us know about steps, paths and parking. We plan the details of the day at the design visit. Saturdays can be arranged.
- You contact us about storage in your converted loft.
- We visit to measure the loft and the way up, including the top flight and any tight turn. Tell us about parking too, as a van often needs a permit or a paid bay.
- A quote in writing follows, covering the design, materials and finish.
- Everything is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections small enough for the loft stairs.
- The sections go up the stairs, are assembled under the eaves and set level. The finish is sprayed in the workshop or hand-painted in the loft.
Before we arrive
- Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
- Clear the area where the furniture is going

Advice
Storage in Crystal Palace homes: local notes
About 36% of the homes in the streets around Crystal Palace went up before 1919, and about 25% between 1973 and 1999, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. There are 19 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Crystal Palace. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. The share of homes built before 1919 around Crystal Palace, about 36%, is well above the figure for Bromley as a whole, about 17%, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. That makes period details like uneven walls, alcoves and picture rails more likely to shape the design.
If your children go to Crystal Palace School or a school nearby, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up. Near listed buildings like Subway, less than half a mile north-west of the centre of Crystal Palace, older homes may keep original joinery that eaves cupboards can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent.

FAQs: loft storage in Crystal Palace
Does a conservation area in or near Crystal Palace affect fitted furniture?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.
How do you fit loft storage in a flat in Crystal Palace?
At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. Eaves cupboards are built in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It is useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
Do I get to choose the colour?
You choose it. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you’ve chosen.
Can you fit furniture on an external wall?
External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.
Is it possible to fit a wardrobe under the slope?
Yes. A wardrobe made for the slope fits where a standard one can’t. The tall end takes hanging space, and the low end can hold shelves or drawers. It’s scribed to the slope and walls.
Do you do the electrics?
No. We’re carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design.
Could you do it yourself?
Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths.
The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot typically do that in an older room.
Why people ask for loft storage in Crystal Palace
Some people want to make more of a dormer. Shelves, a desk or a seat in the dormer make it useful. It adds storage without crowding the room.
People normally get in touch with us about things like these:
- A boarded loft that’s hard to keep organised
- A loft room that doubles as an office or guest room
- A dormer that is not being used
- Low eaves that nobody can use
If your home is one of the older houses near St Paul's, a dormer in a converted loft can hold shelves or a small desk.
Choosing a carpenter
- Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
- Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?
- How they’ll get the furniture into the room
- Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
