Making use of awkward spaces in Crystal Palace

Homes built before 1919 make up about 36% of the housing in the area around Crystal Palace, with about 25% built between 1973 and 1999, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Crystal Palace include Subway (Grade II*), less than half a mile north-west, and Crystal Palace Lower Level Station (Grade II), under half a mile south-west. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for instance removing original joinery or fixing into it, can require listed building consent from the council. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. The share of homes built before 1919 around Crystal Palace, about 36%, is well above the figure for Bromley as a whole, about 17%, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. So older-house details are more likely to come into the design of fitted cupboards.

For families living near Crystal Palace School, fitted cupboards can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home. If you live in a period home close to St Paul's, a shallow cupboard in a narrow hall can hold coats without blocking the way.

Fitted cupboards in Crystal Palace: what you get

We make our cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, chosen for the job each part does. MDF is stable and takes paint well, while birch plywood is good for long shelves. The finish is either spray painted in our workshop or hand painted, in the colour you choose. We make fitted cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the things people most often want solved are a linen cupboard on the landing and a boiler cupboard that keeps access clear.

A deep space is only useful if you can reach the back of it, so drawers, lift-up lids or shallow shelves are chosen to suit the space. For a home in Crystal Palace, what works depends on how deep and how tall the space is. Any meters, fuse board or boiler keep the access they need.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. The finish is stated too, whether that is spray painting or hand painting.

Boards, parts and paint

Spray-painted finish

Spray painting suits doors and panels that you want to look crisp and even, and it’s finished before fitting day.

Moisture-resistant MDF

Moisture-resistant MDF is stable and takes paint well, so it suits painted cupboards. It copes well in utility rooms and on cooler external walls.

Questions we’re often asked

Can you make fitted cupboards for a home in Crystal Palace?

Yes. Crystal Palace is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Bromley and London. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit.

I live in a flat in Crystal Palace. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. Fitted cupboards are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

Can you build a cupboard around a boiler?

Yes. The cupboard is built around the space and ventilation the boiler’s instructions ask for, with doors that open wide for servicing. Any work on the boiler itself is for a Gas Safe registered engineer.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, by prior arrangement. Let us know when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.

What happens when you come to measure?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.

Can a fitted cupboard cover the meters and fuse board?

Yes. We can build a cupboard that hides them neatly without getting in the way of access. Moving them isn’t our work; that’s for your supplier or an electrician.

When is bespoke worth it?

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths.

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t normally do that in an older room.

The problems fitted cupboards solve

Some spaces are just hard to use. A recess beside a chimney breast, a gap at the end of a corridor or the space over a stair can all hold a cupboard that fits it exactly.

Typical reasons people contact us include:

  • Boxing in a boiler with room for servicing
  • Landing shelves for bedding and towels
  • Space for laundry, cleaning things and boots
  • Using the full height of a room

For a flat near Crystal Palace station, fitted cupboards are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • How doors and drawers are fitted
  • Have they thought about parking near you?
  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

Looking after your furniture

People planning fitted cupboards often ask about these. They’re worth knowing whatever the room:

  • Make a note of what needs a home
  • Mention any boiler, meter or fuse board early
  • Look at your lease before fixing to the walls
  • Make sure walls are dry before we fit

Meter and fuse board cupboards work best when they stay easy to open. Try not to fill the space in front of them, so engineers and meter readers can get to them quickly.

If there’s damp on a wall, have it sorted before we fit. Damp behind a cupboard can lead to mould, particularly on a colder external wall. We can allow for ventilation where it is needed.

From workshop to your room

In older rooms, the furniture normally has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site, so it sits neatly against the room. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the cupboards and the room, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. London parking ranges from controlled zones to driveways and private bays, so tell us what applies during the design visit. For a flat, building rules on lifts and working hours are worth checking.

  1. You get in touch and let us know where the cupboards should go. It might be a hallway, a landing, a utility or a boot room.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and talk through doors, shelves and rails.
  3. We send a quote that sets out the design, the materials and the finish, for you to read through.
  4. We make the carcasses, doors and shelves in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the cupboards in your home, scribed to the walls and set level. We check each door and shelf with you before we leave.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day

Getting a quote

It is useful to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space. To send them over, use our contact form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.
