Built-in bookshelves for your home in Eastfields

About our built-in bookshelves in Eastfields

Older rooms often have skirting, picture rails and coving to work around. Shelves can stop beneath the picture rail, run to the cornice or be cut around the details. Walls in older houses are rarely flat, so we scribe the edges on site. Most enquiries start with empty alcoves that could hold books and shelving behind a desk for books and files, and the answer is made in our workshop from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

Around Eastfields, interwar houses or semi-detached and detached homes make up a good part of the housing. In a typical 1930s house, the front room has a bay at one end and a chimney breast with an alcove to either side, which decides where built-in bookshelves sit. Walls in houses of that age are normally straighter than in Victorian ones, though they’re still checked and scribed where needed.

If the job needs another trade, like an electrician or a plumber, we’ll tell you. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Is bespoke worth it?

A standalone bookcase needs to be fixed to the wall for safety anyway, so the difference is smaller than it seems. What really changes is the fit, the strength of the shelves and the finish. Standard widths rarely add up to the length of a real wall, which fitted furniture avoids. It can also go up to the ceiling rather than stopping short.

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, and that is part of the price. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured.

What you get with us

The problems built-in bookshelves solve

A move into a period home often prompts it. The alcoves beside a chimney breast are an obvious home for shelving.

Typical reasons people contact us include:

  • Bookshelves in keeping with an older house
  • Shelves packed two rows deep
  • Shelving that frames a window
  • A room lined with books

If you live near Figge's Marsh, shelving that stops short of the window keeps the view of the green.

What to check before you book

  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?
  • Whether they measure the room themselves

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

Materials and finishes

Moisture-resistant MDF

Cupboard doors in MDF stay flat and paint well. There’s no grain to show through the paint.

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is stiff and strong, which makes it our usual choice for long or heavily loaded shelves. You can paint the edge or show the layers.

Living-room carpentry in Eastfields: local notes

In the neighbourhood around Eastfields, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 43%) and before 1919 (about 16%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Near the centre of Eastfields, Historic England’s list includes Eagle House (Grade I), under half a mile west, and Prospect House (Grade II), under half a mile south-west. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for example removing original joinery or fixing into it, can need listed building consent from the council. It’s worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. About 43% of households in the area around Eastfields live in terraced houses, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. Terraced houses in London often have alcoves beside a chimney breast, and built-in bookshelves are made to those widths.

For families living near St Mark's Church of England Academy, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room. If you live in a flat close to Mitcham Eastfields station, it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.

Looking after your furniture

The finish lasts best with a little care, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. These practical tips help:

  • Consider deeper cupboards at the bottom
  • Note the sizes of your largest books and records
  • Mention parking and stairs when we visit
  • Think about whether a radiator should move before fitting

Keep a record of the colour. Small marks on a hand-painted finish are simple to touch up.

Keep any gap or opening above a radiator clear of books and objects. Trapped heat isn’t good for the room or the books.

FAQs: built-in bookshelves in Eastfields

Do you cover homes near Mitcham Eastfields station?

Yes. We cover all of Merton and the rest of London. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with a few details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Is Eastfields in the area you cover for built-in bookshelves?

Yes. Eastfields is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Merton and London. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with a few details.

Is it possible to frame a window with bookshelves?

Yes. Shelves can run either side of a door or window and bridge across the top. It uses wall space that’s often left bare and can frame a window seat.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

You can choose between two finishes: by spray or by hand. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

What happens at the measuring visit?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and go through the design with you. We will also ask about access and parking, and afterwards we send a written quote.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Not normally. Inside a house, fitted furniture does not normally need planning permission. If the building is listed, works affecting its character can require listed building consent, so ask the council’s conservation officer.

From workshop to your room

You are welcome to ask questions while we work. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so the day itself is about careful fitting and leaving the room tidy. How long the fitting takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. If you have a driveway, it can make unloading simpler, so let us know at the design visit. Otherwise, details of permits or nearby bays help. Doorways, stairs and floors are covered on the way in.

  1. You tell us about your books and the wall you have in mind. It might be a whole wall, an alcove or the space around a door.
  2. We come to measure and talk through depths, heights and cupboards.
  3. We put the design, materials and finish into a quote in writing.
  4. Once you’re happy, the shelving is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We bring it to your home and fit it in place. Everything is levelled and scribed to the walls as it goes in.

Before we arrive

  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
