DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, and standard units leave gaps.

Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: flat-pack is usually cheaper to buy. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

Fitted cupboards in Eastfields: what you get

Our fitted cupboards are made for homes in Eastfields and all over London. It starts with a design visit, where we measure and talk through what you need, followed by a written quote. Once agreed, we make the cupboards in our workshop and fit them in your home. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the cupboards and the room, and your quote sets out the fitting days, so you’ll know before we start. If you’re living with somewhere for coats, shoes and bags and floor-to-ceiling storage in a flat, fitted cupboards made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish can solve it.

An interwar house tends to have truer walls than a Victorian one, though rarely square corners. Around Eastfields, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a big part of the housing, and every piece is still scribed where it meets the wall. Lids, doors and drawers are set level on site so they run true.

You get the quote in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and talk it over at home. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Fitted storage in Eastfields

In the streets around Eastfields, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 43%) and before 1919 (about 16%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. The National Heritage List records 8 entries within half a mile of the centre of Eastfields. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. TfL’s Ultra Low Emission Zone covers every part of London, Merton included. It applies to the vans that deliver and fit furniture in Eastfields, as it does anywhere else in London. How the van gets to your door is planned during the design visit.

If your home is one of the older houses near St. Mark's Church, an old boiler or airing cupboard can be rebuilt with proper shelves. For a family home near St Mark's Church of England Academy, fitted cupboards can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit. If you live near Figge's Marsh, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and fitted cupboards can give those things a place.

Looking after your furniture

None of this takes much effort. What we’d suggest:

  • List what you want to store before the design visit
  • Do not store things against the boiler
  • Let us know how parking works on your street
  • Deal with any damp walls first

A boiler cupboard should be left as it was designed, with nothing stored against the boiler or over its vents. The doors open wide for servicing, so the engineer can reach the boiler.

Leasehold flats can have rules about alterations, so check your lease first. We cannot advise on your lease, but it is worth doing before the design is agreed.

What happens on fitting day

If anything comes up on the day, just ask. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so the day itself is about careful fitting and leaving everything tidy. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the cupboards and the room, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Semis and detached houses often have a front path or a side gate, which can make carrying in easier. Gates, paths and steps up to the door are part of the route we measure. Floors, stairs and doorways are protected on the way in.

  1. You let us know where the cupboards should go and what they need to hold, including anything awkward like a boiler or meter.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and look at the walls, floor and ceiling.
  3. We send a quote in writing with the design, materials and finish.
  4. The cupboards are made and finished in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit them in your home, scribed to the walls and set level. A hand-painted finish is applied on site, if you chose one.

How to prepare

  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager

How to get a quote

You do not need exact measurements to get started. We measure everything properly during the design visit. To get started, get in touch through our contact form and let us know about the room. You receive a quote in writing after the visit.

What affects the cost of fitted cupboards

A few things affect what fitted furniture costs:

  • Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • How big the furniture is
  • Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. A larger piece means more material and more time. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

What we need to know

Getting a few details early makes the visit more useful. Where you can, include:

  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • Where you live, with the postcode

It is useful to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space, particularly with rough sizes. To share them, send us a few details through our contact form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

You can put together a flat-pack cupboard yourself, which is a fair point in their favour. A fitted cupboard needs a design visit, a quote, workshop time and fitting, but it’s built around your space. In an extended or opened-up house, old and new walls often meet slightly out of line, which shows up against standard furniture. Fitted pieces are scribed to both.

There’s no price list, because every piece is designed for one room. Instead, we measure, discuss the design and then quote in writing. To start, fill in our short enquiry form.

Your questions about fitted cupboards in Eastfields

Do you make fitted cupboards for homes in Eastfields?

Yes, Eastfields is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Merton and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, and then we send a quote.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Eastfields?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the design visit.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and a written quote follows.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Not normally. Inside a house, fitted furniture doesn’t normally need planning permission. If the building is listed, works affecting its character can need listed building consent.

Should I send pictures?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, particularly with rough sizes. To send them, fill in our short enquiry form.

Who chooses the colour?

You do. The paint colour is agreed with you.
