Under-Stairs Storage in Farthing Street
Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. Our work on under-stairs storage in Farthing Street starts with a design visit, and everything is made at our workshop.
- Nowhere to keep the vacuum and ironing board
- A fuse board that’s hard to get to
- Coats and shoes piling up in the hall
Under-stairs storage for your home in Farthing Street
About our under-stairs storage in Farthing Street
In a narrow hallway, the stairs may offer the only spare room for coats and shoes. We can make a coat section with a rail or hooks, shoe drawers and a small shelf for keys and post. With a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, it sits quietly in the hall. For a home in Farthing Street, it can make the front door feel far calmer. We make under-stairs cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the things people most often want solved are a sloping corner nobody can reach and storage that doesn’t match the hallway.
In a family house, the hall and stairs usually carry the most clutter. Around Farthing Street, where interwar homes, semis and detached houses make up a big part of the housing, well-planned storage by the door or under the stairs can take a lot of it. Anything that needs to stay reachable, like meters or a fuse board, is designed around.
After the design visit, we send you a written quote. It sets out the design we’ve talked through, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you are getting.

Caring for painted furniture
Getting the most from under-stairs storage starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:
- Think about how your household uses coats and shoes
- Empty the cupboard so we can measure every corner
- Find out what sits in the space now, from meters to pipes
- Tell us about parking at the measuring visit
Once the fitting is done, the storage is ready to use. Paint needs time to cure fully, so treat the new finish gently at first. Keep tape, sharp knocks and strong cleaners away from it while it settles.
Keep sharp or very heavy items away from the painted fronts. Store tools in a box or bag, not loose against the doors. Minor chips can be touched up with the matching colour.
Under-stairs storage for homes in Farthing Street
The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Farthing Street were built between 1973 and 1999 (about 31%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 27%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Farthing Street include Farthing Street Farmhouse (Grade II), less than half a mile north-east, and Orange Court Farmhouse (Grade II), under half a mile east. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for example removing original joinery or fixing into it, can need listed building consent from the council. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. The Ultra Low Emission Zone has covered all of London since it reached the outer boroughs on 29 August 2023. It applies to every van that comes to fit furniture in Farthing Street. Access and parking are talked through at the measuring visit.
If your home is one of the older houses near St Mary's Church, pull-out drawers can reach right to the back of a deep under-stairs space. If you live near South Park, under-stairs cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things.

The problems under-stairs storage solve
Some people simply want somewhere for coats and shoes. A coat and shoe section under the stairs keeps the floor clear and the door easy to open, and everyone knows where things go.
Most of the enquiries we get are about needs like these:
- A staircase with untidy space beneath it
- A hallway crowded with coats and shoes
- Wanting a quiet corner for paperwork
- A tired under-stairs cupboard that stands out
If you live in a flat close to Orpington station, the route in is measured as well as the room, and the sections are sized to fit it.
Before you choose who makes it
- Whether they measure the room themselves
- Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
- Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
- How doors and drawers are fitted
Made for the room, or bought in a box?
Standard drawer units are made in fixed sizes that rarely match the depth under the stairs. Bespoke drawers are made to the depth you have, so the back of the space is used too. Each one is sized for what it will hold, from shoes to the vacuum cleaner. In an extended or opened-up house, old and new walls often meet slightly out of line, and straight-sided ready-made units make that obvious. Fitted pieces are scribed to both.
Access to the room makes a difference too. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design.

How fitting day works
You will not need to do much on the day. Someone needs to let us in, and the room should already be cleared. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long the fitting takes depends on how much storage you want under the stairs, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Some interwar and suburban streets have driveways, which can make unloading easier, so it’s worth mentioning at the design visit. Otherwise, a visitor permit or a nearby bay helps. Floors and doorways are protected while the pieces come in.
- To begin, send us a few details through our contact form; a brief note on the space and what it holds now is plenty.
- We visit to measure the slope and the floor, and agree a design that keeps any meter or fuse board accessible.
- A quote in writing follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
- The storage is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with access to the meters planned in.
- The storage is fitted and set level, and the meter access is checked with you.
Before we arrive
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
- Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
How to get a quote
The quote is built from the design visit. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. A written quote follows the visit for you to look over. To arrange the visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

Questions we are often asked
Is Farthing Street in the area you cover for under-stairs storage?
Yes, Farthing Street is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Bromley and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, followed by a quote.
Can you fit furniture in a home close to Orpington station?
Yes. We cover all of Bromley and the rest of London. To get started, you can use our contact form with a few details about the room.
What if my walls and floors are out of level?
Walls and floors that aren’t true are part of the job in older homes. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth, so there are no gaps at the sides.
Which materials go into your under-stairs cupboards?
Our storage is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then painted. Drawer boxes are birch plywood, as it is strong and holds screws firmly. The materials and finish are agreed in your quote.
Are drawers or cupboards better under the stairs?
It depends on the shape of the space and what you want to store. Drawers make the low end useful, because you pull the back of the space to you. Cupboards suit the tall end, for coats or a vacuum cleaner.
Is it possible to have a desk built under the stairs?
Often, yes, where the space opens onto a room and there is enough height at one end. A built-in desk with shelves above and drawers below can work well. Any socket or light there is for your electrician, and we plan around it.
What it’s made from
Pull-out drawers
A tall pull-out drawer can hold coats on a rail or a vacuum cleaner standing up. Shorter drawers lower down suit shoes and bags. The design visit is where we agree the mix.
Moisture-resistant MDF
Hallways see wet coats, shoes and umbrellas, so a moisture-resistant grade makes sense. It gives the painted fronts a smooth base, and it holds its shape in the space under the stairs.
