Loft Storage in Farthing Street

Loft storage in Farthing Street: eaves cupboards, drawers and wardrobes in converted lofts. We visit to measure and discuss the design, make the furniture in our workshop and fit it.

  • Furniture that cannot get up to the loft
  • Boxes piled on loft boards
  • Space under the eaves going to waste

What affects the cost of loft storage

The price reflects the time and materials the job needs. That depends on:

  • The width and height of the space
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • The number of doors and drawers
  • Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size is the starting point. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

What to send when you get in touch

A little information at the start saves time later. Where you can, include:

  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you don’t, that is fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, use our contact form.

About our loft storage in Farthing Street

Getting furniture up to a loft room is part of the planning. We measure the route not just the room, so every section made in our workshop fits up the stairs. It is part of the job for any loft room in Farthing Street. Most enquiries start with wasted space behind the knee walls and a boarded loft with no proper shelving, and the answer is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

In a family house, the hall and stairs normally carry the most clutter. Around Farthing Street, where interwar homes, semis and detached houses make up a big part of the housing, well-planned storage by the door or under the stairs can take a lot of it. Meters and fuse boards stay easy to reach.

If the job needs another trade, like an electrician or a plumber, we’ll tell you. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

FAQs: loft storage in Farthing Street

Is parking a problem for fitting in Farthing Street?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It’s useful to tell us about parking during the design visit.

I live near Orpington station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Bromley and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Not normally. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. Listed buildings can need listed building consent for works that affect their character.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement. Let us know when you first get in touch.

Should I send photos?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, particularly with rough sizes. To send them, tell us about the room on our contact form.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

That is normal in older homes, and it’s what scribing is for. We scribe the edges to follow the wall and set the furniture level on adjustable feet or a plinth.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is normally a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.

The problems loft storage solve

Some people have a boarded loft and want proper shelving. Shelves and cupboards keep things off the floor and easy to find. It suits seasonal things and boxes.

Here’s what loft storage can help with:

  • Seasonal things cluttering the loft room
  • A loft room with too many jobs
  • An empty dormer that could hold shelves
  • Low eaves that nobody can use

If your home is one of the older houses near St Mary's Church, a dormer in a converted loft can hold shelves or a small desk.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Will the quote be in writing?
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
  • How the furniture will be finished, and where
  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

Looking after your furniture

None of this takes much effort. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Note how narrow the loft stairs are
  • Note any vents or insulation in the eaves
  • Decide whether you’d prefer drawers, cupboards or both
  • Think about matching the woodwork or the walls

Small marks on a hand-painted finish can be touched in. Keep a note of the colour for later. If anything isn’t right with the storage, message us from the contact page and we’ll talk it through.

Sharp edges and heavy boxes can chip a painted edge. Put tools in a case so they do not knock the paint. Minor chips can be touched up with the matching colour.

What happens on fitting day

The last stage of the day is the finish. With a spray finish from the workshop, there is usually only filling and touching up to do in the room; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. Some interwar and suburban streets have driveways, which can make unloading easier, so let us know at the measuring visit. Otherwise, details of permits or nearby bays help. Floors and doorways are protected while the pieces come in.

  1. You tell us about your converted or boarded loft.
  2. We measure the eaves, the slopes and the stairs up to the loft.
  3. We agree the cupboards, drawers and wardrobes, and send a written quote.
  4. The storage is built in our workshop, in sections sized for the stairs.
  5. The storage is fitted, scribed to the slopes and checked with you. Any hand painting is done in the loft.

Before fitting day

  • Keep pets in another room while we work
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager

Ask for a quote

We quote once we have seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and go through the design with you, and the written quote comes after. The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. To book a design visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Making use of tricky spaces in Farthing Street

About 31% of the homes in the area around Farthing Street went up between 1973 and 1999, and about 27% between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Farthing Street include Farthing Street Farmhouse (Grade II), under half a mile north-east, and Orange Court Farmhouse (Grade II), less than half a mile east. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for example removing original joinery or fixing into it, can need listed building consent from the council. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. About 59% of households in the neighbourhood around Farthing Street live in detached or semi-detached houses, the 2021 Census shows. A house like that usually has more rooms to plan around than a flat, and sometimes a driveway that makes unloading easier.

If your children go to Downe Primary School or a school nearby, deep drawers suit the bulky things families collect, from scooters to swimming kit. Down House, about 1 mile south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, the knee walls of a converted loft can take drawers as well as cupboards.
