Living-room carpentry in Farthing Street: local notes
The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Farthing Street were built between 1973 and 1999 (about 31%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 27%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Farthing Street include Farthing Street Farmhouse (Grade II), less than half a mile north-east, and Orange Court Farmhouse (Grade II), under half a mile east. If your own home is listed, works inside that affect its character, like fixing into or removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. Parking controls in London are set borough by borough, so Bromley has its own. Depending on your street in Farthing Street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a council bay suspension may be needed. Parking near your home is worth mentioning at the measuring visit.
If your children go to Downe Primary School or a school nearby, built-in bookshelves can be planned with low cupboards for toys and higher shelves for everything else. For an older house near St Mary's Church, walls that bow and floors that slope are why built-in bookshelves are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.
Farthing Street is about 4 miles north-east of Orpington, part of the London Borough of Bromley. We can visit homes in Farthing Street on weekdays, or on a Saturday by arrangement. Farthing Street is one of 49 places on our list for Bromley.

About our built-in bookshelves in Farthing Street
If a radiator sits where you’d like shelves, it’s worth planning carefully. The heat needs somewhere to go, so any shelving over or around a radiator is planned with a gap or an open front. Often the simplest answer is to stop the shelves short of it, or ask their plumber about moving it. We make built-in bookshelves from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the things people most often want solved are wasted wall space around a door or window and bookshelves in keeping with an older house.
Around Farthing Street, with interwar houses or semis making up much of the housing, the living room may be a good size but with fewer recesses than a Victorian house. That leaves room for built-in bookshelves in the alcoves, along a full wall or around the chimney breast, depending on how you use the room. The carcasses are made from moisture-resistant MDF or birch plywood, painted in a colour agreed with you.
Once you’ve read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made at our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so every detail can be checked first.

How fitting day works
Every fitting follows the same order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and your quote sets out the fitting days. If you have a driveway, it can make unloading simpler, so it’s worth mentioning at the measuring visit. Otherwise, a visitor permit or a nearby bay helps. Doorways, stairs and floors are covered on the way in.
- You send us some details about the room and what the shelves will hold, including roughly how many books there are.
- We visit to measure the wall and talk through the design.
- Your quote follows, with the design, materials and finish set out, for you to look over.
- The bookcase is made in our workshop, using birch plywood or moisture-resistant MDF sized for the span.
- We install the bookcase, set it level and fix it with fixings that suit the wall. A hand-painted finish is applied on site, if you chose one.
Preparing the room
- Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
- Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
Starting with a design visit
You do not need exact measurements to get started. We measure everything properly at the measuring visit. To get started, send us a few details through our contact form with some details about the room. The written quote follows the visit.
Advice
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls.
Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well.
Do you need built-in bookshelves in Farthing Street?
For some, the aim is a home library or a quiet study. A wall of shelves changes how a room feels.
Most of the enquiries we get are about needs like these:
- Wasted wall space around a door or window
- Shelves deep enough for large books
- Storage for children’s books and games
- A home library or study
The wider area includes historic houses like Down House, about 1 mile south. For a period home anywhere nearby, walls that bow and floors that slope are why built-in bookshelves are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.
Before you hire any carpenter
- Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
- Will they visit to measure before quoting?
- Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?
- How they deal with uneven walls and floors
Is bespoke worth it?
Standalone bookcases cost less and you can have them right away. They also come with you when you move. Built-in shelves stay with the house and are made for its walls, which is the trade-off. Bays, box rooms and stair bulkheads are where off-the-shelf furniture struggles most, and those are common in interwar houses. Fitted furniture is made around them.
The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside.

Pricing built-in bookshelves in Farthing Street
What it costs comes down to the materials and the time involved. The main factors are:
- The internal fittings
- The number of doors and drawers
- How square the room is
- The overall size of the piece
Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.
Getting in touch
Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:
- What the furniture needs to hold
- The type of home and how the room is reached
- Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, when we’ve measured up and talked through the design. For a quote, use our contact form.
Your questions about built-in bookshelves in Farthing Street
Is parking a problem for fitting in Farthing Street?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.
Do you make built-in bookshelves for homes in Farthing Street?
Yes. Farthing Street is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Bromley and London. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with some details.
How long will the fitting take?
The time on site depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We’ll explain what fitting day involves before we start.
What if the stairs or lift are small?
Getting it in is planned during the design visit. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doors, and each section is made to a size that will get through.
Can the fitting be on a Saturday?
Yes, by prior arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.
What depth do built-in bookshelves need?
The depth is set around your books. Deeper cupboards or shelves at the bottom and shallower shelves above is a common layout.
