About our under-stairs storage in Luxted
Every staircase has its own shape. The soffit slopes, the stringer sets its own line, and floors are often a little out of level. We scribe the storage to the stairs and the walls, so it looks as though it has always been there. It’s the part of the job a boxed unit simply can’t manage. We make under-stairs cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the things people most often want solved are a meter or fuse board buried behind clutter and a vacuum cleaner that has nowhere to go.
Around Luxted, with interwar houses or semis making up much of the housing, the hallway may be wider than in a Victorian terrace, with room for a cupboard by the door. Bays at the front suit a seat with storage below, with a grille so any radiator below keeps heating the room. Under-stairs cupboards are measured and made for the house you have.
If the job needs another trade, like an electrician or a plumber, we will tell you. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

How fitting works for under-stairs storage
Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details, so it looks as though it was always there. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the space and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturdays can be arranged.
- It starts when you contact us about the space under your stairs.
- We visit to measure and talk about how you will use the space, and check where the meters and fuse board sit.
- Your quote sets out the design, the materials and the finish.
- We make the drawers, doors and carcasses in our workshop.
- The storage is fitted and set level, ready for the first coats and shoes, with the finish sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
- Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
- Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
Arranging a design visit
We quote once we’ve seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. To arrange a visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Your questions about under-stairs storage in Luxted
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Luxted?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to let us know about parking at the design visit.
Do you cover homes near Chelsfield station?
Yes, homes across Bromley and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit.
What if my walls and floors are out of level?
That is normal in older homes, and it is what scribing is for. We scribe the edges to follow the wall and set the furniture level on adjustable feet or a plinth.
Can under-stairs storage work around the fuse board?
Yes. We plan the storage so the meter or fuse board stays easy to reach, typically behind its own door. Access matters for readings and safety checks, so we design around it.
Can the under-stairs storage be painted to match the hall?
Yes. The storage is spray-painted or hand-painted in a colour agreed with you. You can match it to the walls, the banisters or the skirting, so it sits quietly in the hall.
What happens when you come to measure?
It’s a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, then send a written quote.
Fitted storage in Luxted
Homes built between 1945 and 1972 make up about 29% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Luxted, with about 25% built between 1973 and 1999, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Luxted include Down House (Grade I), about 0.5 miles north, and Luxted Farmhouse (Grade II), under half a mile south-east. If your own home is listed, internal works that affect its character, like fixing into or removing original joinery, can need listed building consent. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. About 76% of households in the streets around Luxted live in detached or semi-detached houses, the 2021 Census shows. In a semi or detached house, a driveway, where there is one, can make unloading easier.
For an older house near Church of St Peter and St Paul, the space under the stairs may hold the meters or the fuse board, and the cupboards are planned around them. If you live in a flat close to Chelsfield station, the route in is measured not just the room, and the sections are sized to fit it. If your children go to Cudham Church of England Primary School or a school nearby, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up.

Flats, blocks and rented homes
We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let. It’s made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, finished by spray or by hand.
If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways as well as the room, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through.
What it is made from
Hand-painted finish
A hand-painted finish can be applied once the storage is in place. It’s easy to touch up later. Paint needs time to cure fully, so it is best treated gently at first.
Moisture-resistant MDF
MDF can be cut and shaped cleanly, which suits the angled panels under a staircase. The moisture-resistant grade we use is stable and paints well. Most of what you see on the finished storage is MDF.
Caring for painted furniture
Getting the most from under-stairs storage starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:
- Make room so the whole space can be measured
- Decide whether you’d like coats on hooks or on a rail
- Note the things that need a home under the stairs
- Look for meters, a fuse board or pipes before we visit
If the hallway is being decorated afterwards, ask your decorator to protect the fronts. Tape on fresh paint can pull it off, so keep it away from the doors and drawers. If anything isn’t right, drop us a line using the contact form and we will talk it through.
Check now and then that handles and hinges are tight. A loose handle is easy to tighten before it works its way out. If a drawer stops running smoothly, use our contact form and describe it.
What affects the cost of under-stairs storage
What it costs comes down to the materials and the time involved. That depends on:
- Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
- The width and height of the space
- Parking and unloading on your street
- Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
Rooms that aren’t square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. That’s reflected in the quote, written once we have measured up.
Helping us understand the room
A little information at the start saves time later. Where you can, include:
- Approximate measurements of the space
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
- Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
- The postcode, so we can plan the visit
Rough measurements are fine at the start. We measure everything properly at the design visit. To arrange it, tell us about the room on our contact form. You receive a quote in writing after the visit.
