Window seats for your home in Forty Hill

About our window seats in Forty Hill

A window seat can hide a surprising amount of storage. A lift-up lid is simple and gives access to the full depth, while drawers are easier to reach if there is a cushion on top. We will talk through which suits the way you use the room. We make window seats from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the things people most often want solved are a period room that needs furniture to suit it and a nursery or bedroom short of storage.

With interwar houses or semis a big part of the picture around Forty Hill, many have had the loft converted, leaving low eaves and sloping ceilings. Those spaces, along with bays and hallways, are where fitted storage can add the most. We build storage in lofts that are already converted or boarded.

Where other trades are needed, for example an electrician to move a socket, we point that out, so it can be arranged before fitting day. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Your questions about window seats in Forty Hill

Is parking a problem for fitting in Forty Hill?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the measuring visit.

Can you make window seats for a home in Forty Hill?

Yes. Forty Hill is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Enfield and London. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with some details.

Should I choose a lift-up lid or drawers?

It depends on what you will store and how often you will reach for it. A lid gives access to the whole space, good for blankets and occasional things, while drawers are easier with a cushion on top.

Can I send photos before the visit?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. You can send them when you use our contact form.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement. Let us know when you first get in touch, and we’ll see what we can do.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

It needs a little planning: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. Damp treatment is not something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.

Materials and finishes

Birch plywood

Seats take weight every day, so they need to be strong. That’s why we use birch plywood for the frame and top. It suits the drawers below too.

Lift-up lids

A lift-up lid gives access to the full depth of the seat. It’s good for bulky things that are not needed daily. The lid is made to lift and close cleanly.

Making use of awkward spaces in Forty Hill

About 43% of the homes in the area around Forty Hill went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 24% between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Near the centre of Forty Hill, Historic England’s list includes Forty Hall (Grade I), less than half a mile north, and Worcester Lodge (Grade II), under half a mile north. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. Strict stopping rules apply on red routes, which TfL runs. If you live on or close to a main road in Forty Hill, let us know at the measuring visit. We’ll plan where the van can stop.

For a family home near Worcesters Primary School, window seats can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home. If you live near Enfield Town Park, window seats can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things. If you live in a flat close to Turkey Street station, it is useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.

How we price window seats

We quote each job after the design visit, because no two rooms are the same. This is what makes the difference:

  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • How big the furniture is

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. You will see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

Before the design visit

These details help when you get in touch:

  • Rough measurements: width, height and depth
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • The type of home and how the room is reached

Photos help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space. To share them, tell us about the room on our contact form, and we will arrange a design visit.

Fitting day, step by step

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site. How long the fitting takes depends on the shape of the bay or recess and what goes under the seat, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Clearing the room and the way in beforehand helps the day run well. Fitting day starts with protecting the floors and setting out the pieces. Each piece is levelled, scribed where the wall wanders and fixed to suit the wall.

  1. You contact us with a few details about the bay or recess.
  2. We visit to measure the angles of the bay and the floor, and talk through the design.
  3. We send a quote in writing.
  4. The seat is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, following the angles we measured.
  5. We fit the seat in your home, trimming the edges to meet the walls and cill.

How to prepare

  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room

Getting a quote

Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and talk through the design with you, and the written quote comes after. The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. To book a design visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Practical tips

New paint needs time to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. Beyond that, these tips help:

  • Tell us about parking during the design visit
  • Note the position of any radiator and its pipes
  • Check the shutters so the seat can leave room for them
  • Think about what you’ll store under the seat

Condensation can form on windows in cold weather, so wipe the cill and the back of the seat if it gets wet. Opening the window for a while helps. Should you have a question about the seat, send us a few details through our contact form and we’ll help.

Check now and then that hinges and handles are tight. Tightening early stops a small looseness getting worse. If a lid or drawer starts to catch, tell us about the room on our contact form and describe what’s happening.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder.

The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.
