Questions from Enfield Highway

Do you cover homes near Brimsdown station?

Yes. We cover all of Enfield and the rest of London. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Does a conservation area in or near Enfield Highway affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Can you build storage around a gas meter or fuse board?

Yes. We plan the storage so the meter or fuse board stays easy to reach, usually behind its own door. Access matters for readings and safety checks, so we design around it.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

It can be done with some care: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. Damp treatment is not something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.

Can you fit a small desk under the stairs?

That depends on the shape of your stairs and the room beside them. We look at it at the measuring visit and tell you honestly whether it will work. If it does, a compact desk with shelving can suit paperwork and a laptop.

Do you do the electrics?

No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician. We will design around them.

Under-stairs storage for homes in Enfield Highway

We make each under-stairs cupboard in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood suits drawer boxes and carcasses, as it is strong and holds screws firmly, and MDF gives the doors and fronts a smooth surface for paint. Once painted, by spray or by hand, it’s brought to your home in Enfield Highway and fitted. Typical reasons to get in touch are a tired under-stairs cupboard that stands out and coats and shoes piling up in the hall; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

In a family house, the hall and stairs normally carry the most clutter. With interwar houses, semis and detached homes a large part of the housing around Enfield Highway, fitted storage near the front door can take much of it. Anything that needs to stay reachable, like meters or a fuse board, is designed around.

After the design visit, we send you a written quote. It sets out the design we’ve talked through, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you’re getting.

How fitting works for under-stairs storage

Getting everything level comes first. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, which keeps the lines straight. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. It helps to clear the room and the route before we arrive. Fitting day starts with protecting the floors and setting out the pieces. The pieces are levelled, fitted to the walls and fixed back.

  1. You get in touch and describe the stairs and the hall.
  2. We visit to measure the space at several points along the slope, as stairs and walls are rarely square in older houses.
  3. We send a quote in writing for the storage.
  4. In our workshop we build every part from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, following the slope we measured.
  5. On fitting day the units are set level and scribed to follow the stairs and walls.

Before fitting day

  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way

The problems under-stairs storage solve

Many people struggle with the shallow, sloping end under the bottom steps. It is too low to stand in and too deep to reach into. Drawers that slide out on runners turn that tricky corner into useful storage.

Requests we hear often include:

  • An old cupboard door that does not suit the hall
  • A low corner too deep to reach into
  • A staircase with untidy space beneath it
  • A hallway crowded with coats and shoes

Forty Hall, about 1.3 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, the triangle under an old staircase is often deeper than it looks.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
  • How they handle walls that aren’t straight
  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?
  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

How it is made

Moisture-resistant MDF

With wet shoes and coats coming in, a moisture-resistant grade of MDF is a sensible choice. It gives the painted fronts a smooth base, and it holds its shape in the space under the stairs.

Hand-painted finish

Some people prefer a hand-painted finish for its softer look. It’s done on site, in the colour you choose. If it’s ever chipped, it can be touched up.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

It’s worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

Under-stairs storage in Enfield Highway: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Enfield Highway were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 55%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 16%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Enfield Highway include Wright's Almshouses (Grade II), under half a mile west, and The Bell Inn (Grade II), less than half a mile north. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features such as panelling can require listed building consent. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. London’s red routes are run by TfL, and stopping on them is tightly controlled. If your home is on or just off a main road, it is useful to mention it. That way we can plan where to load and unload.

What it costs

There is no set price, because there’s no set room. What affects it comes down to:

  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • How square the room is
  • The number of doors and drawers

In London, parking can affect the price. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay near your home. Let us know about parking during the design visit.

Before the design visit

Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:

  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Your postcode and the borough
  • Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • Any ideas or images you’ve saved

A quote begins with a few details from you: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of pictures if you can take them. When you’re ready, send us a few details through our contact form. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.
