  • A sloping corner nobody can reach
  • Storage that doesn’t match the hallway

When you need someone else

It’s useful to know what’s outside our work before you plan:

  • Any wiring or new lights, which need an electrician
  • Changing where a meter sits, which is not carpentry
  • Altering or cutting into the stairs

If in doubt, you can drop us a line using the contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

What goes into it

  • Hand-painted finish
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Coat hooks and shoe shelves
  • Birch plywood
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Pull-out drawers

Under-stairs storage in Foxbury: what you get

In some homes the stairs rise from the living room or kitchen, so the storage beneath them is on show. That calls for clean lines, well-fitted doors and a finish that suits the rest of the room. Fronts can be plain or panelled, with handles chosen to suit the room. The result should look like part of the house, not an afterthought. If your home has a tired under-stairs cupboard that stands out and a low corner too deep to reach into, under-stairs cupboards made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish can solve it.

Rooms in post-war homes tend to be simple, with plain skirting and no cornice, so fitted storage can be crisp and simple to match. Around Foxbury, many homes were built between 1945 and the early 1970s. We still measure everything, as no room is perfectly square.

Everything we agree at the measuring visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it is easier before the furniture is made.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Off-the-shelf storage comes in the colours the maker offers. Bespoke storage can be painted in the colour you choose, by spray or by hand, so it can sit with the walls, the banisters or the skirting. Big ready-made pieces can be tricky to carry up communal stairs, whereas fitted furniture is made in sections sized for the way in. The sections are joined once inside.

How it’s painted is part of the price: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

How fitting day works

Once the main sections are fixed in place, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly. The time the fitting takes depends on how much storage you want under the stairs, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Stairwells in post-war blocks can have tight turns, so sections are sized for both the stairs and any lift. Letting the caretaker or managing agent know ahead of time helps. We cover the floors in shared areas on the way in.

  1. You contact us about the space under your stairs.
  2. At the design visit we measure the underside of the stairs and the floor, then talk through drawers, cupboards and coat storage.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. In our workshop we build every part from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, following the slope we measured.
  5. On fitting day the units are set level and scribed to follow the stairs and walls.

Preparing the room

  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Empty the space we’ll be working in
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room

Advice

Boards, parts and paint

Moisture-resistant MDF

Because it cuts cleanly, MDF is ideal for the angled panels that follow the stairs. We use a moisture-resistant grade, which stays stable and takes paint well. Most of what you see on the finished storage is MDF.

Doors and drawer fronts

We make the fronts from moisture-resistant MDF and finish them in the colour you choose. Their edges are cut to follow the angle of the stairs, so the gaps stay even all the way along.

Your questions about under-stairs storage in Foxbury

Is Foxbury in the area you cover for under-stairs storage?

Yes, Foxbury is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Bromley and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, and then we send a quote.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Sidcup station?

Yes. We cover all of Bromley and the rest of London. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Is it possible to match the colour of my hallway?

Yes. You choose the colour, and we agree it before the work starts. A spray-painted finish is done in our workshop, and a hand-painted one can be done on site. Either finish can follow a colour already in the hall.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps, which helps avoid condensation and mould. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

Which materials go into your under-stairs cupboards?

Our storage is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then painted. Birch plywood holds screws well, which matters for drawers that carry weight. The materials and finish are agreed in your quote.

Which works best under the stairs, drawers or cupboards?

Often a mix works best. Deep pull-out drawers suit the shallow end under the bottom steps, while a cupboard at the tall end takes coats, the vacuum or an ironing board. We talk it through during the design visit.

Under-stairs storage in Foxbury: local notes

In the streets around Foxbury, the largest groups of homes date from between 1945 and 1972 (about 30%) and before 1919 (about 23%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. The National Heritage List records 8 entries within half a mile of the centre of Foxbury. Being near listed buildings doesn’t make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. On TfL’s red routes, the rules on stopping and loading are strict. If your home is on or just off a main road, it helps to mention it. Then we can work out where to load and unload.

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Frogpool Manor Farm, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. For a flat near Sidcup station, the route in is measured along with the room itself, and the sections are sized to fit it. For a family home near Chislehurst School for Girls, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up.
