Under-stairs storage in Friday Hill

How we make under-stairs storage for Friday Hill

Some under-stairs spaces are open enough for a small desk. We can build a desk with shelves above and a drawer or two below. If you’d like a socket or a light, your electrician fits it and we plan the furniture around it. We’ll look at whether it suits your stairs when we visit in Friday Hill. We make under-stairs cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a vacuum cleaner that has nowhere to go and needing a compact spot for a laptop.

Around Friday Hill, with interwar houses or semis making up much of the housing, the hall is often wide enough for coat and shoe storage. Bays at the front suit a seat with storage below, with a grille so any radiator below keeps heating the room. Each space is measured and under-stairs cupboards are made to suit it.

The quote comes in writing, so there’s time to read it properly and share it with anyone else involved. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Ready-made drawers come in set depths, and the space under a staircase is often deeper than any of them. Drawers made for the space can run the full depth, so nothing is lost at the back. We size each drawer for what it will carry. Ready-made furniture rarely suits a bay, a box room or a bulkhead over the stairs, and those are common in interwar houses. Built-in pieces are designed to fit them.

How it’s painted is part of the price: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

Why choose Bespoke Carpentry in Friday Hill

  • Made in moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
  • A design visit, then a written quote
  • Finished by spray or by hand
  • Made for your room, not a standard size

How we price under-stairs storage

The price for your room depends on:

  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • The internal fittings
  • How big the furniture is

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, and the quote follows.

What to send when you get in touch

The more you can tell us at the start, the better the design visit goes. It’s useful to include:

  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • What the furniture needs to hold

You do not need exact measurements to get started. Everything is measured properly when we visit. To get started, use our contact form. You receive a quote in writing after the visit.

From workshop to your room

You will not need to do much on the day. Someone needs to let us in, and the room should already be cleared, as we’ll have talked about during the design visit. After that, it is over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the space and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Interwar houses normally have a straight run of stairs and a reasonable hallway, but the route in is still measured, not just the room. The furniture comes in sections and is put together where it’s going.

  1. You get in touch with some details and, if you like, a sketch.
  2. At the design visit, we look at the stairs, the hall and what you need to store.
  3. A quote in writing follows, with the fitting days agreed. Take your time to look through it.
  4. We make the drawers, doors and carcasses in our workshop. The materials are moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home and leave it ready to use, with the finish sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.

How to prepare

  • Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day

How to get a quote

Getting a quote starts with a few details: the room, rough sizes and some pictures if you have them. When you are ready, send us a few details through our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design, then send a quote in writing.

Looking after your furniture

The finish lasts best with a little care. These practical tips help:

  • Plan decorating around the fitting
  • Decide whether you’d like coats on hooks or on a rail
  • Make a list of what you want to store before the design visit
  • Let us know about parking near your home

Before we leave, we check every drawer and door with you. Any door to a meter or fuse board is checked so it opens fully and leaves the meter in view. That way, nothing is left for you to sort out later.

Check now and then that handles and hinges are tight. Tightening a screw early stops a small looseness becoming a problem. If a drawer stops running smoothly, send us a few details through our contact form and describe it.

Where other trades come in

We are carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:

  • Moving gas pipes under the stairs
  • Painting the hallway walls and ceiling
  • Altering or cutting into the stairs

Not sure whether your space suits under-stairs storage? You can drop us a line using the contact form and we’ll tell you before you arrange a visit. How it works.

Materials and parts

  • Hand-painted finish

Questions we are often asked

Is parking a problem for fitting in Friday Hill?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Can you make under-stairs storage for a home in Friday Hill?

Yes. Friday Hill is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Waltham Forest and London. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with some details.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, by arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.

What happens during the design visit?

It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, then send a quote in writing.

What is under-stairs storage made from?

Our storage is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then painted. Drawer boxes are birch plywood, as it is strong and holds screws firmly. The materials and finish are agreed in your quote.

How is under-stairs storage priced?

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. The size of the space, the number of drawers and doors, and the finish all shape the price. To get a quote, fill in our short enquiry form and we’ll arrange a design visit.

In the area around Friday Hill, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 45%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 18%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. We go through parking and access at the design visit.
