Fitted storage in Walthamstow Village
The biggest shares of homes in the area around Walthamstow Village were built before 1919 (about 50%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 15%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. 4 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of central Walthamstow Village. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. On TfL’s red routes, the rules on stopping and loading are strict. Where a home in Walthamstow Village is on or beside a main road, it is useful to mention that at the design visit. We’ll plan where the van can stop.
Bruce Castle, about 2.9 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, under-stairs cupboards are scribed to walls and stair strings that are rarely straight. For a flat near Walthamstow Central station, under-stairs cupboards are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. If you live near Lloyd Park, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and under-stairs cupboards can give those things a place.

Under-stairs storage in Walthamstow Village
In many terraced houses, the gas meter, electricity meter or fuse board sits under the stairs. These must stay easy to reach for meter readers and engineers. Our designs keep a clear way to them, often behind their own door, so you gain storage without losing access. At the design visit in Walthamstow Village, we note what’s there and design around it. We make under-stairs cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the things people most often want solved are nowhere to keep the vacuum and ironing board and stairs open to a room, with clutter on show.
A solid brick outside wall in an older house can be cold and sometimes damp, so a gap and ventilation behind fitted storage help avoid condensation. A large share of the homes around Walthamstow Village date from then. Any damp is dealt with before storage goes in.

Flats, blocks and rented homes
In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, which we check at the design visit.
In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Mention it when you get in touch.

Is bespoke worth it?
Flat-pack furniture is designed to be easy to carry home and quick to assemble. Ours is designed for one staircase and built in our workshop to suit it, with birch plywood drawer boxes that hold screws well and carry weight. The right choice depends on how hard you want the space to work. Standard units assume square rooms, and period homes seldom have them, so you end up with gaps, wobbles and units that do not meet the skirting. Fitted pieces follow the wall and sit level.
Access to the room makes a difference too. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, and that’s part of the price. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit.

How fitting day works
Finishing comes last. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. Terraced streets in London are often lined with parked cars, so details of permits, bays and any loading restrictions help. Unloading is kept short, with sections taken straight inside. Saturday fitting can be arranged.
- You get in touch with some details and, if you like, a sketch. It helps to say whether the meters are under there.
- We visit to measure and talk about how you will use the space, and check where the meters and fuse board sit.
- A written quote follows, with the fitting days agreed. Take your time to look through it.
- We make the drawers, doors and carcasses in our workshop.
- The storage is fitted and set level, ready for the first coats and shoes, with the finish sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand

Advice
Boards, parts and paint
Spray-painted finish
Spray painting gives the fronts a very even surface. It is applied in our workshop, and the paint needs time to cure fully once it’s fitted.
Moisture-resistant MDF
Moisture-resistant MDF is stable and takes paint well. It is used for the doors, fronts and side panels, where a smooth, even finish matters most.
FAQs: under-stairs storage in Walthamstow Village
Is parking a problem for fitting in Walthamstow Village?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan around it.
Can you fit furniture in a home close to Walthamstow Central station?
Yes. We cover all of Waltham Forest and the rest of London. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with some details about the room.
Which materials go into your under-stairs cupboards?
Our storage is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then painted. Birch plywood holds screws well, which matters for drawers that carry weight. The materials and finish are agreed in your quote.
Does fitted furniture need planning permission?
Typically not. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. Listed buildings can require listed building consent for works that affect their character.
Can you build storage around a gas meter or fuse board?
Yes. The design keeps a clear way to the meter or fuse board, often with a door of its own. Access matters for readings and safety checks, so we design around it.
Can the under-stairs storage be painted to match the hall?
Yes. We paint the storage in the colour you choose, by spray or by hand. It can match the walls, the stairs or the woodwork, so it sits quietly in the hall.
